Chiappemacine lies below the famous Guardiola parcel, at an altitude of around 550 metres – a comparatively warm and wind-protected section by Etna standards, with broodingsoils consisting of quarried lava and ash. These conditions give the Nerello Mascalese from here a darker fruit, softer tannins and a more open character. The vines are around 80 years old and, as with all Contrada wines, the wine is aged for around 18 months in large, used wooden barrels.

A rich ruby red colour with a garnet-red hue in the glass. The aroma is immediately accessible: ripe red cherry, damson plum, some violets, warm earth and a hint of smoke. On the palate, Chiappemacine shows a much rounder style than the higher-lying Contrade – with soft tannins, harmonious acidity and plenty of flavour in the fruit. A fine spiciness pervades the mid-palate, underpinned by salty and slightly ferrous notes. The finish is juicy and inviting, with mineral elegance and good length. Contrada C is the most charming and accessible wine in Passopisciaro's quartet of vineyards. Less austere than Guardiola, less ascetic than Porcaria – but with an almost Burgundian warmth and openness. A Nerello Mascalese that cleverly plays off the more southerly location while always retaining its Etna character. SUPERIORE.DE
