There are pyramids in the Vigna Iannazzo. Not the Egyptian ones – small, hand-built towers made of black lava, which farmers stacked out of the fields for centuries when clearing the land for farming. Each stone was carried, each tower layered, without mortar, using the ancient dry stone walling technique. The Piramidi dell'Etna – as they are called – are today one of the silent, unmistakable landmarks of the Cottanera vineyards. And they stand right here: in the Vigna Iannazzo, a named single vineyard within the Contrada Feudo di Mezzo, one of the recognised MGAs of Castiglione di Sicilia.

Cottanera, run by the Cambria family since the 1960s and now in its third generation, has built its philosophy on a single principle: parcel-by-parcel vinification, because Etna speaks differently in every square metre. Anyone who takes this seriously will inevitably end up with a wine like this – no longer the Contrada, but the Vigna as the address. A Nerello Mascalese from the heart of the Feudo di Mezzo, on volcanic lava soil, from old vines that have worked their way into this soil over decades.

Bright ruby red colour. Wild red fruit, black cherry, violets, lavender, a characteristic hint of flint and volcanic ash on the nose – complex and of great purity. Structured on the palate and carried by elegant tannins, with a long, balsamic-mineral persistence. The Piramidi dell'Etna as a wine – impressively created from what the soil has to offer.
