In the 1970s, Giovanni Massolino bought the Parafada – a bold move he dared to make at a time when the economic situation was anything but rosy. But Giovanni was the sort of person who prioritised vision over caution. The vineyard, whose name derives from the hamlet of the same name, lies at an altitude of 320 metres in that famous amphitheatre between Lazzarito and Gabutti, perfectly south-facing. A ridge-top site that offers natural protection from wind and storms – as if nature itself had realised that something special was meant to grow here.

Massolino owns just over a hectare. Sixty-year-old vines grow on compact, calcareous-marly soil that is so nutrient-poor that the vines are forced to put down deep roots – and that is precisely where the secret lies. Geological and morphological perfection that has developed over millennia. The grapes from here are exceptional: concentrated, intense, with that expressive power that has made Serralunga a legend. Since 1990, the Parafada has been vinified separately – traditionally macerated in oak vats, then aged for thirty months in large Slavonian oak barrels, and finally for a further year in the bottle.

A deep garnet red with vibrant highlights that shift with age. An intense, multi-layered bouquet of red fruit, floral notes and spicy hints unfolds slowly. On the palate, it is powerful, dense and characterised by a certain rigour that reflects the complex soils of Serralunga, only reaching its full elegance after several years.
