Sibi et paucis – "for oneself and a select few". Under this Latin motto, the Sandrone family sets aside a small portion of its Nebbiolo production each year to be aged in the perfect conditions of its own wine cellar. The Valmaggiore is given four years' additional ageing beyond the regular release – time that allows the Nebbiolo from the Roero to develop in a way that requires nothing but patience.

In the 1990s, Luciano, Luca and Barbara Sandrone fell in love at first sight with a hillside near Vezza d'Alba. Valmaggiore lies in the Roero region on the left bank of the Tanaro, a steep amphitheatre facing south, with sandy, soft soil often interspersed with fossilised shells in this area. The first vintage appeared on the label in 1994; the vines are tended by hand, row by row, and only the ripest grapes are harvested. The year 2020 saw a long period of alternating warmth and cool spells: In April, four or five sunny days were followed by one or two rainy days; at the end of May, the vines flowered with good fruit set; the heat in late July was tempered by rain and water reserves in deep soil layers; in mid-September, thunderstorms swept through, followed by sunshine and cool nights. Harvesting took place from 1 to 18 October. The must undergoes spontaneous fermentation in open stainless-steel tanks, and the wine matures in LitersFrench oak tonneaux. After being released in September 2022, it spends a further four years in the Sandrone family's private cellar. A seal on the label tells the story of this journey, which began in the underground cellar.

Red cherries, wild strawberries, redcurrants and pomegranate lend the wine a bright, fresh character. On the palate, the balance is surprising; the tannins are pleasant and smooth, the finish is remarkably long, and mineral notes linger for a long time.
