Cerretta is one of the best-known and most sought-after vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba, a name that appears on the label not only for Luigi Baudana's wines. The south-east-facing slope lies at an altitude of over 300 metres, on the Lequio Formation – a calcareous, limestone-rich soil dating back some twelve million years – which gives the Nebbiolo its most aromatically complex character. Since 2008, the Vaira siblings have been managing the small estate, covering over four hectares, together with the Baudana family; it is fully certified organic. The grapes ferment for around fifty days under the cap, with gentle pumping-over and punching-down cycles, before spontaneous malolactic fermentation takes place in the spring. The wine then matures for a good 28 months in custom-made Slavonian oak botti, ranging in size from 15 to 25 hectolitres, before being bottled and left to mature for a further 12 months.

Garnet red in the glass. The bouquet reveals notes of tobacco, ripe citrus, dark cherry, blackberry and dried rose, accompanied by a balsamic hint reminiscent of mint. Mineral on the palate, with orange peel, an almost exotic hint of pepper and dense yet elegant tannins. A Barolo that embodies all the power of its vineyard and possesses incredible finesse. "Expressive, showing an enveloping touch of roses and dried flowers with underlying sandalwood and blood oranges. The medium- to full-bodied palate—leaning toward medium—is very composed. Complemented by ethereal fruit, the fine-grained, expansive tannins focus toward the finish, lending definition. Drinkable now with proper aeration, but better in 2028." James Suckling
