When Franco Pola bottled the first bottle of his Barbaresco Bordini in 1970, he not only marked the beginning of a family history, but also set an example of the bond between people and the vineyard that has endured for generations. The vineyard bears the same name as the street on which the estate stands – Via Bordini 15 – and this geographical coincidence holds a deeper truth: Here, where the winery building looks directly out onto the south-east-facing slope, family and terroir are inextricably intertwined. On sandy limestone-clay soil, 280 metres above sea level, Nebbiolo vines aged between 50 and 60 years are rooted – one hectare of which is even over 70 years old and ungrafted, a living link to the time when Franco's father, Secondo, still ran the estate as a farm.
In the glass, a brilliant garnet-red ruby colour with orange highlights. The nose reveals intense complexity: violets and dried roses mingle with aromas of ripe plum, Indian spices, liquorice and a hint of camphor. On the palate, Bordini reveals its true class: full-bodied and concentrated, with a silky texture and remarkably fine tannins that unfold in multiple layers. Dried cherry, redcurrant and raspberry compote blend with notes of star anise, blood orange, crushed stone and dried herbs. The lively acidity lends the wine the tension and length for which great Barbaresco is renowned, whilst the minerality of the limestone-clay soil imparts a crystalline precision to the final. A wine that not only expresses the exceptional quality of old, ungrafted vines, but also the Pola family's philosophy, developed over five decades: to let the terroir speak for itself with respect, artisanal precision and without compromise! "The young Matteo Pola is once again demonstrating his skill in the challenging 2023 vintage. Of the new releases, my favourite is the Bordini, which he produces from vines over 60 years old on a south-east-facing slope. It has exotic spicy notes reminiscent of cardamom and mace. In the background, there are hints of toasted hazelnuts and almond blossom. On the palate, the freshness of the fruit unfolds – dark red cherry and wild blackberries. The powdery tannins are at the forefront, providing admirable structure and complexity. This Barbaresco has a lot to offer without coming across as over the top." Decanter
The Fontanabianca 2023 Barbaresco Bordini stands out in this tasting for its dark fruit, earthy notes and a more pronounced precision, which provides a wonderful contrast to the rather relaxed character of this warm vintage. Like the other wines in the selection, it displays generous ripeness with notes of dried redcurrants and wild strawberries, yet this historic vineyard impresses with greater structure, energy and length."
