Cannubi. Three syllables that sound like an anthem in the world of Barolo. The most famous vineyard in the Langhe, the heart of the municipality of Barolo, the absolute king among the crus – so say the insiders. Almost one hundred per cent white clay, gently rolling hills between Barolo, La Morra and Novello. A site that does not possess the masculine power of Serralunga or Castiglione, but instead shows the finer, more Burgundian side of Nebbiolo: red fruit, finesse, harmony. Here, where Sandrone and Scavino also make their best wines, Silvia Altare has been cultivating just 0.25 hectares since 2011 – two leased plots that only fill four barriques. Less than 1,500 bottles per year. A privilege for a few.

The lease? A story in itself. The costs are so astronomical that the price of the wine can barely cover them. But for Silvia, gaining prestige and passion outweigh financial sense. Before the tasting of the 2021 vintage, the end was looming: the contract expired and there was great uncertainty. Then, at the last minute, redemption – ten more years of Cannubi. But at an even higher price. What makes this wine so special? Vines around 30 years old on Marna rock with clay and sand, exposed to the south. Four to five days of maceration in rotary fermenters, then 24 months of ageing in French barriques (one new, three used).

Light ruby red with garnet reflections in the glass. The nose? An explosion: juicy, dense, ripe red cherry, cherry liqueur, fine herbs, mint, nettles, violet liqueur, white pepper, delicate brown spices. Multi-layered and powerful on the palate, always running on the red fruit that is so typical of the 2021s from Altare. The tannins are grippy, finely structured and coat the tongue – endless red cherries and fragrant red flowers in tow. The finish? Minutes long. Cherry, spices, elegance. A Cannubi that needs a few years longer in the cellar than the Arborina to integrate its many tannins. Great stuff from a great vintage. SUPERIORE.DE
