From Ginestra, the highest point in Monforte d'Alba, you can see as far as the Alps, with Mount Monviso taking centre stage. Conterno Fantino is situated on this hill, which is home to the estate, and this is where the Sorì Ginestra is grown. Its first harvest coincided with the year the estate was founded in 1982, and it was also the first vintage of Barolo that the two founders bottled. The oldest vines on this south-facing slope, at altitudes of between 330 and 370 metres, were planted in 1971.

The topsoil is light, silty-sandy and calcareous; beneath this lies Sant'Agata marl containing sandy fossils. With yields of 55 to 60 double centners per hectare, the vines remain modest; the grapes are harvested by hand in mid-October. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with the wood handling the malolactic fermentation, and the wine is matured in French oak barrels of various sizes.

Bergamot and mint, along with potpourri, tea, dried fruit and blood orange. On the palate, it is full-bodied and robust, with firm, ripe tannins and fresh, finely integrated acidity; the finish is long and has a hint of tobacco spice. The estate strives for elegance, fruitiness and that kind of beauty where one isn't quite sure why one likes it. It once intended to publish a ranking of all vintages, but no consensus could be reached, and the advice now is: for every bottle you open, set a second one aside.
