There are wines that define regions. Gaja's Barbaresco is one of them. It has been produced since 1859, over five generations, and in all these decades it has remained what it always was: the calling card, the brand ambassador, the essence of what Barbaresco means. While the single-vineyard wines – sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn, Costa Russi – show virtuosity, it is this classic Barbaresco that captures the soul of the terroir. It is the sum of fourteen vineyards spread across the municipalities of Barbaresco and Treiso, each parcel a mosaic stone in the big picture.
The fourteen vineyards have illustrious names: Loreto, Castello, Masue', Faset, Rocagliette, Roncaglie Vecchio, Roncaglie Nuovo, Bernino, Bricco, Trifolera, Valdrapp in Barbaresco – plus Pajoré, Sotto, Pajoré Sopra and Pajoré Università in Treiso. Each of these vineyards is harvested separately, vinified separately and matured separately. Three to four weeks of maceration, then twelve months in French barriques, whereby only a small proportion of new wood is used today – angelo Gaja's style has become more refined over the years, moving away from the dominance of wood towards the clarity of the fruit. After the first year, the wines are blended and matured for a further twelve months in large vats. Vinification is very reductive, which means that the wines need time to open up in the glass.
The 2022 vintage – a year that struck the perfect balance between power and elegance. In the glass, it is a bright garnet red with orange-coloured highlights on the rim. The nose is initially restrained, then a kaleidoscope unfolds: ripe cherries, fragrant strawberries in sweet spices, fresh herbs and mixed flowers – rose petals, violets and a hint of lilac. These are joined by balsamic notes, graphite, orange peel, dried cherries and the mineral depth that Nebbiolo draws from the limestone marl soils of Barbaresco. Lively and taut on the palate, with an energy that electrifies the palate. Flavours of blackberries, dried blood orange and black tea dance alongside perfectly integrated tannins – velvety, ripe, yet with the bite that gives the wine structure and longevity. The acidity is lively, the texture silky, the final long and persistent with mineral notes and echoes of red cherries. A wine that is already accessible now, but will age easily until 2045. A timeless icon. SUPERIORE.DE
"Powerful, bright ruby colour with a fine garnet sheen. Intense and very clear nose, full flavours of dark cherries, blackberries and fresh plums. Compact, grippy tannins on the palate, very precise, juicy fruit, very good length." Falstaff
"14 vineyards provide the grapes for this classic: charming yet refined raspberry nose, finely chiselled, with perfectly integrated wood; juicy in the mouth with a lot of melting, the tannins close-meshed, elegant and with notes of cherries and lilac on the finish." James Suckling
"The Barbaresco 2022 is a pure and total seduction. Plush contours and lifted aromatics make a strong first impression. Cedar, tobacco, new leather and liquorice meld with a core of red Nebbiolo fruit. The 2022 is a wine of great density and texture and outrageously beautiful. Great class." Vinous
"The 2022 Barbaresco shows Gaja's Midas touch and is a seamless wine with a long, polished mouthfeel. This Barbaresceo shows the purity of Nebbiolo while remaining chiselled and elegant. The bouquet reveals pretty layers of crushed roses, stones and plump fruit. The tannins are beautifully balanced." Wine Advocate
"A fresh and restrained wine with an exquisite blend of graphite, orange peel, dried cherries and strawberries, as well as hints of potpourri and liquorice. Medium to full-bodied, it displays velvety, ripe tannins with taut acidity and a juicy style." James Suckling
