There are wines that seek their time. And there are wines to which time confides its secrets. Historical Vecchie Vigne is one of those rare gems that only reveal their true colours after more than five years of ageing – a tribute by the Bernetti family to Verdicchio and at the same time a radical statement: that even non-aromatic white grape varieties can be among the very best if they are given the time they deserve. In Montecarotto, where the hills of the Verdicchio Classico find their noblest expression, there is a small plot at 310 metres above sea level, isolated in the middle of the historic Vecchie Vigne. Vines over fifty years old are rooted here in brooding, fresh, loamy soils that provide Verdicchio with the minerality and substance that only old vines can give. Eastern exposure, perfect balance between growth and yield – these vines were planted in the early seventies and today produce grapes of a concentration and ripeness that are harvested by hand at the end of September, beginning of October, berry by berry intact.

After gentle pressing and spontaneous cooling, the must ferments at 16 to 18 degrees in stainless steel tanks, slowly over ten to fifteen days, without malolactic fermentation. Then the real journey begins: the wine rests in concrete tanks on the fine lees for 18 months, followed by a further 36 months in small steel tanks before being left to rest in the bottle for at least six months. 60 months in total – five years in which Verdicchio shows its most unknown, fascinating side.

Historical has an elegant straw yellow colour with greenish reflections in the glass. The bouquet unfolds with the patience of a wine that knows no haste: chamomile and apricot, almond and hazelnut, interspersed with subtle notes of sage and mint, which combine to create a multi-layered mosaic of flavours. The big surprise on the palate: none of the often-cited lightness of Verdicchio remains. Instead, it is a wine of impressive depth and structure, dry, soft and fresh at the same time, supported by a subtle acidity that carries the savoury, spicy finish like a fine line that lingers into the long final. Historical Vecchie Vigne is Umani Ronchi's answer to the question of whether Italy can also compete among the great white wines. A wine that makes time its ally, proving that Verdicchio is far more than just an uncomplicated summer wine – a grape variety with the potential for immortality.
