After "A" comes "M". This is not a weak alphabet exercise – this is strong hierarchy. If Amrità is the immortality potion, then "M" is the monument. The man himself, in bottle form. The legacy of MARIO Schiopetto, born in 1930, died in 2002, lies in every vintage of this wine – in the Ponca soils of Capriva, in the philosophy of the cellar work, in the conviction that a great white wine needs no compromises, only the courage to achieve total perfection.
Friulano was his passion from the very beginning. In 1965, he bottled the first single-varietal Tocai and changed the image of Italian white wine forever. Fifty years later, James Suckling selected Schiopetto-Friulano as the first Italian white wine ever to be among the top 100 wines in the world. "M" is the crowning glory of this line – and quietly carries a German secret: a small batch of Riesling completes the cuvée. Mario had travelled to Germany, worked with German cellar masters and brought their precision to Capriva. The Riesling is the lasting echo of these journeys. Hand-picked, soft pressing, decanting without the addition of sulphur, fermentation in steel with pied de cuve, eight months on the lees, followed by further months in used barriques.
Brilliant straw yellow in the glass with golden-green reflections. Pear, apricot, wild flowers, almond, a hint of beeswax – and underneath that fine mineral tension that only Riesling gives. Full-bodied, savoury and dynamic on the palate. Long, vibrant finish. A wine that bears Mario's name – and still does him justice today. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 M-Mario Schiopetto develops slowly in the glass as a decidedly savoury blend of young peaches and flint gives way to wild herbs, iodine and spice. The wine is elegant, with a round, almost oily texture accompanied by lively acidity and a salty minerality that tantalises the palate with ripe fruit that emerges towards the end. The finish is of admirable length and finesse, lightly textured, with hints of lemon zest and mint that fade with time. But the best is yet to come." Vinous
"Very aromatic with ash, crushed shells, stones, brine, white roses and honey blossoms. Dried mushrooms. Slate. Medium-bodied with a racy and refined texture that gives it great length and beauty. From vines planted in 1954." James Suckling
