“del Pompiere” Friulano Friuli DOC 2020
Mario Schiopetto was born in 1930, he grew up in the Osteria ai Pompieri owned by the family and had his first professional experiences as a fireman and later as a truck driver. In 1963, guided only by his taste and love of wine, he began to devote himself to wine production in his parents' farm and produced the first pure Tocai in 1965. At the time, the historic label included a drawing of his fire truck, which he also used to deliver wine to customers. With the current 2019 vintage, the winery is reflecting on these historical roots and is reviving the cute drawing on part of its wine labels.
Bright straw yellow with golden reflexes. Freshly fragrant of passion fruit and flowers of meadow flowers. On the palate fresh and elegant, juicy with a fine note of green almonds and yellow fruits, well integrated acidity, medium long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

“Fiore di Campo” Cuvée Bianco Friuli Isonzo DOC 2020
Fiore di Campo, based on Friulano, is no more and no less than the self-proclaimed "family wine" of the Lis Neris house, and that is entirely justified: pretty straw yellow with green-gold reflections. Enticing mineral and citrus nose with notes of peach, jasmine, almonds and liquorice. Firm, fresh and crisp on the palate of apricot and green apple, plus a lovely creamy texture. Its full body and gentle complexity marry in a final with considerable freshness and high drinkability. Perfect entry into the world of Lis Neris' terrific white wines. SUPERIORE.DE

Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2020
Broad aroma of exotic fruits, almond, nut, spicy notes of mint and light aromas of peach, sage, jasmine and white pepper. On the palate balanced, elegant, with good acidity and harmonious complexity, typical bitter almond tone in the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Friulano is wildly fresh yet tropical, with nuances of sour melon, young mango and white smoke forming its attractive bouquet. This impresses further, with lively acidity balancing its silky textures and ripe orchard fruits, with a savory herbal tinge adding unexpected depths. The 2020 is perfumed and fresh through the finale, leaving the mouth watering, but also a gentle tug of residual tension. Very nice." Vinous

Friulano Collio DOC 2020
Mineral and lush Friulano with a wonderful scent of grapefruit, white pepper, figs and bananas. On the palate, more appetising flavours of tropical fruits, apricots and hazelnuts. Very long and, as every year, great! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Friulano is delicate and understated in the glass, as peach skins and young mango give way to wet slate. It’s deeply textural, almost oily in feel, yet with bright acidity and cooling minerality to balance, as pretty inner florals arch across the palate. Its mineral-tinged orchard fruits come through in the finish and last incredibly long, while tapering off with a salty flourish. The 2020 is a nicely refined Friulano that could use a short stay in the cellar to develop more of its aromatics." Vinous
"Dried peaches and honeysuckle with some smokiness in the nose. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a creamy texture. Flavorful and satisfying." James Suckling

Friulano Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2010
With their well-proportioned acidity, structure and complexity, Antonio Bragato's white wines are made for a long life. Graceful Friulano, with the centrality and self-assurance of the great 2010 vintage. Smells typical of the variety of ripe pear, apple and flowers, a hint of fresh mint increases the complexity. Flowing on the palate, full-fruited maturity, lots of freshness, elegant and highly individualistic. The wine has been perfectly stored at a constant 14°C for the last 10 years. Be sure to aerate it a little and taste it at above 12°. SUPERIORE.DE

“Dolée” Friulano Friuli Isonzo DOC 2019
Friulano Dolée is another impressive flagship of Vie di Romans. Bright straw yellow colour. Clean, fresh aromas of honey, citrus and pear, complemented by ripe banana. A ripe, finessed wine that finishes long and with excellent acid-fruit balance. SUPERIORE.DE
"This is really intense and exotic with lots of dried-pineapple and peach character. Spicy, too. It's full-bodied and layered with some phenolics, but the dry and exotic star fruit and peach is so intense at the finish." James Suckling

It's soft and enveloping with ripe peach and tropical leanings, as zesty acids add a pinch of spicy tension. “San Zuan” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2019
San Zuan is an attractive, well-proportioned white made from 100% Friulano grapes. Complex bouquet of white peaches and pears, flowers and a subtle earthiness. Full and round on the palate, yet elegant, with some minerality, great length and nice aging potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"A bouquet showing young mango, nectarine and dusty yellow florals creates an elegant introduction to the 2019 Friulano San Zuan. This gains in richness and savory depths with time in the glass. It’s silky, weighty yet poised, with sour citrus opening the experience, giving way to white orchard fruits, as masses of stony minerality collect toward the close. That said, there’s a sensation of opulence here, even as the San Zuan tapers off with mouthwatering salty tension. The 2019 could use another year to fully come together; but once it does, it should be absolutely irresistible. The San Zuan is produced from three separate parcels of old vines (sixty years and older) within the estate vineyards." Vinous

“Sigar” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2018
Livio Felluga's new crus come from massal selection. For this purpose, selected vines are reproduced in particularly advantageous locations in order to renew vineyards with especially high-quality vines and to further improve the quality of individual varietal wines.
Livio Felluga often stood in the evening twilight, his gaze fixed on the sky, with a cigar, watching the weather. The Friulano vines from which this cru comes were planted as early as 1963, producing medium-sized, loose-grained grapes. Yeast ageing and maturation in terracotta tanks give Sigar its depth and pronounced spiciness and minerality. Golden yellow with greenish nuances. In the complex bouquet fine saffron spice, candied lemon peel, dried apricots and lemon peel. The drink is grippy, compact and fresh with a seductive spiciness and salty note, then balsamic notes in the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

“Buri Bellaria” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2019
The site near Buttrio, where the grapes of the autochthonous grape variety Friulano (formerly Tocai) come from, belongs, together with Rosazzo, to the Grand Crus of the Friuli Colli Orientali appellation. Here, there are not only no regulations, but also a lean, loose marl soil, which provides for extremely small yields every year. In good vintages, however, one is rewarded all the more for it: The volume and fruit concentration, the lower acidity and the unmistakable saltiness of the wines will lead to pleasurable heights after a few years of bottle ripening, that it will make the lover of complex, energetic whites dizzy. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Friulano Buri Bellaria isn’t quite ready to reveal all of its charms, opening with an alluring yet understated bouquet of ripe pears, apples, hints of mulling spice and dusty florals. It’s an opulent and soothing expression, coasting across a medium-bodied frame with ripe orchard fruits and a hint of custard that comes forward toward the close. There’s a density here that masks a more structured expression beneath, with residual acids which maintain an energetic feel. You can certainly enjoy the 2019 now, but the best is yet to come. Give the 2019 a year or two of cellaring, and watch it shine. The Buri Bellaria hails a vineyard which is managed by the Palazzolo family in Buttrio, and it shows a fruitier and more exotic expression than the estate bottling." Vinous

Antonio Bragato, born in Germany but with an absolute Friulian identity, joined forces 20 years ago with Gianni Maccari, who was cellar master at Livio Felluga for many years and founded his own winery Ronco della Rocca at the beginning of the millennium. Maccari, who has a degree in agronomy and oenology, is considered one of the best-trained viticultural experts in Friuli. The profound knowledge of his own 12 hectares of vineyards as well as the leased plots and the radical precision in the execution of every operation characterise the clear style and the reliable quality of the wines that Antonio Bragato creates there together with him.
From the 2019 vintage, Antonio Bragato's wine experiment enters a new era. Since then, the team has relied on an even more rigorous selection of the oldest vines from the coolest and best sites. The results of the "New Edition" can truly be seen and tasted. They are even more radical in complexity and finesse. We are pleased to be able to offer our customers the smallest editions of these wines, which confirm the many years of work and experience of the two quality fanatics!
Prephylloxera (literally : before-the-vine) comes from Friulano vines over 110 years old. Nutty floral nose with notes of peach, rose petals, lime blossom, hawthorn, a hint of marzipan. Very dense with full soft body, elegant drinking flow. Great aromatic correspondence and length with fine acidity and light tannin on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE

“Zitelle Pesarin” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2018
As always, Paolo Meroi has vinified a great Friulano with classic proportions, of which one can only get hold of a bottle with difficulty due to a total production of just 1,000 bottles. "Vivid straw-yellow with green tinges. Lime, yellow apple, nectarine and thyme on the captivating nose. Then pure, juicy and dense, with laser-like but harmonious acidity lifting and extending flavors of orchard fruit, lime and flinty minerals on the long back end. This is still very young." Vinous
"This is extremely smoky on the nose with flint and gunpowder. Dried apple, lemon and pear character. Full body, dense and powerful. Yet always lively and dancing in the palate. Crazy finish. One of Italy's top whites. Made from vines planted in 1954." James Suckling

Lovers of Friuli certainly know it as Tocai or Tocai Friulano. And if you listen to some of the older winegrowers in the Cormons area, you would never think that this grape variety could not actually come from there.
However, vine researchers found out that the variety originated in the Bordelais and was formerly blended with Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. Even though it is practically extinct around Bordeaux, it is Sauvignonasse, which could be freely translated as Sauvignon-like. Which is why it used to be often confused, especially in South America, where it was often placed between Sauvignon blanc and then actually resulted in a mixed set.
For Friuli, however, it is now simply one of the most important grape varieties. Why they were originally called Tocai or Tocai Friulano is controversial. There are countless stories. It is said that the grape variety was brought from Tokaj by a count who loved the Tokaj. Other stories tell of seedlings that were brought from Friuli to Hungary in the 13th century. All the other stories are probably fictional, too, because the grape variety has only been native to Friuli since the 19th century and has nothing to do with the Hungarian grape variety Furmint. Since 2007, Tocai may no longer appear on the label in order to avoid confusion with Tokaj, since then only Friulano has been on the label.
Friulano matures relatively early and is susceptible to botrytis, mildew and ESCA in humid summers. You therefore have to invest a lot of work in the vineyards. Almost always intense in colour, with rich gold, usually quite full-bodied, with herbal spices, yellow fruit aromas and delicate almond flavour, Friulano is quite typical and easy to recognise even in blind tastings. DNA analyses have not yet been able to identify any known parent vines, only the assumption of some ampelographers that it is Sauvignonasse was confirmed. However, Friulano is the cross partner of the Italian new breeds Fleurtai and Soreli.
Worldwide there are not even 4,500 hectares of the grape variety, 3,000 of which are in Italy alone. In addition to Friuli Venezia Giulia, it is still present in small quantities in Lazio, Lombardy and Veneto, where it is found as Tai in some DOC and DOCG wines. SUPERIORE.DE
