“Fiore di Campo” Cuvée Bianco Friuli Isonzo DOC 2021
Fiore di Campo, based on Friulano, is no more and no less than the self-proclaimed "family wine" of the Lis Neris house, and that is entirely justified: pretty straw yellow with green-gold reflections. Enticing mineral and citrus nose with notes of peach, jasmine, almonds and liquorice. Firm, fresh and crisp on the palate of apricot and green apple, plus a lovely creamy texture. Its full body and gentle complexity marry in a final with considerable freshness and high drinkability. Perfect entry into the world of Lis Neris' terrific white wines. SUPERIORE.DE

Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2021
Gianni Del Fabbro, owner of Ronc di Vico, learned his craft at home in Friuli. At first wine was just a hobby for him, but then he studied the art of winemaking with the support of the respected and highly qualified winemaker Enzo Pontoni, owner of the Miani winery. Highly interesting white with rich aromas of white flowers and bright fruits. Full-bodied taste, generous, wide and mineral, with impressive depth and richness. SUPERIORE.DE

Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2022
Livio Felluga's Friulano is very fresh and tropical, with nuances of sour melon, young mango and white smoke forming its attractive bouquet. It impresses with a lively acidity that balances the silky texture and ripe fruit, and a spicy herbal note that gives it unexpected depth. Perfumed and fresh to the final, it leaves a pleasant mouthfeel, with hints of bitter almond but also a gentle tug of residual tension. Very nice. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, luminous straw yellow. Intense aroma of banana, citrus fruits, herbs in the aftertaste. Fresh and juicy on the palate, pressure-full and fruity in the final." Falstaff
"Subtle and refined on the nose and palate with peach pie and minerals with a hint of nutmeg. Medium body. Round and creamy. Spicy on the finish." James Suckling

“Vigna del Rolat” Friulano Collio DOC 2021
Intense, very elegant bouquet of apple and almond, an extremely complex fruit on the palate; fresh, powerful, rich and with beautiful citrus-fruity length and mineral vein. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Friulano Rolat 2021 is remarkably pretty and floral with a sweet herbal note reminiscent of peach, yellow flowers and lime zest. The bouquet is both spicy and sweet, with glycerine textures. A core of candied citrus provides a nice contrast. A salty note lingers on the crisp final as the mouth waters and hints of sour melon slowly fade. This fabulous Friulano from Raccaro is already running on all cylinders, but has a balance that will carry it over the medium term. Well done." Vinous
"Raccaro has made wine in the heart of the Collio since 1928, producing bottlings of place and beauty ever since. Aromas of apricot, white peach and magnolia spill out the moment you pull the cork. The focused palate dances between showing off the intense minerality of their vineyards and the vibrant fresh fruit flavors that drive the wine. It finishes with balanced acidity, keeping each sip fresh." Wine Enthusiast

Friulano Collio DOC 2021
Mineral and delicate Friulano, on the nose grapefruit, peach, white pepper, figs and bananas. Then deep and complex on the palate with further appetising flavours of tropical fruits, apricots and hazelnuts. Very long and with its salty swing great as every year! SUPERIORE.DE
"Golden pale yellow; fruity, elderflower, appealing; powerful, intensely fruity, nettle, round, delicate, very pleasant." Merum
"Sometimes you can just smell "beautiful", and this is one of those cases. Wafting, almost lacy aromas of white peach, apricot and Fuji apples dance from the glass. Hints of wet river rock and fresh herbs emerge as the wine opens. On the palate, the wine focuses on perfectly ripe stone fruit, wild flowers and crushed rock. Balanced acidity ensures that the wine gains momentum with every sip." Wine Enthusiast
"The Friulano 2021 is youthfully unobtrusive with a pretty bouquet that mixes lemon peel with mint and nuances of crushed rock. It washes over the palate with a tense mix of citrusy acids and salty minerals, while a core of tropical melon develops towards the end. The 2021 finishes on a more delicate note, but long and with pretty inner flowers still lingering. The beautiful balance and underlying power of this wine will ensure it ages beautifully in bottle. The best is yet to come." Vinous
"White peaches and cooked apples with undertones of flint and matches. Also some iron filings. Full-bodied but compact, dense and fresh. Very mineral, with undertones of dried peach, citrus and minerals and a bright finish. Very solid." James Suckling

“La Vila” Friulano Friuli Isonzo DOC 2020
Brilliant golden yellow colour. The nose opens with yellow fruit, summer-ripened peach, pear and honeydew melon, as well as hints of mineral tones, ash and crushed flint. On the palate, Golden Delicious, pear and a certain creaminess, which in turn is flanked by salty notes. The acidity is very well integrated, all in all a wonderful white wine with impressive depth and elegance. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, bright straw yellow colour. Intense nose of yellow peach, jasmine and elderflower, followed by delicate almond flavours. The palate is rich and full, with a refreshing and balanced acidity and a long-lasting finish." Falstaff
"The 2020 Friulano La Vila is savory in the glass, as sage hints give way to smoky crushed stone and young peach. Soft and enveloping, this possesses a core of zesty acidity, minerals and green citrus fruits that creates a reverberation of tension. It finishes crunchy and dramatically long yet leaves the mouth watering as sweet sage tapers off." Vinous
"Dried pineapple, star fruit, pineapple and salted plums on the nose. Medium-bodied with lots of dried-fruit and tropical character. Oily finish." James Suckling

“Dolée” Friulano Friuli Isonzo DOC 2021
Friulano Dolée is another impressive flagship of Vie di Romans. Bright straw yellow colour. Clean, fresh aromas of honey, citrus and pear, complemented by ripe banana. On the palate, its soft texture provides an ideal sounding board for the beautifully layered fruit basket of peach, melon, quince and fresh pear. A ripe, finessed wine that finishes long and with excellent acid-fruit balance. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Friulano Dolée is exotically spiced and vibrant in the glass, with an intense burst of lemon meringue complemented by sweet mint and crystallized ginger. Silky and supple on the palate, this boasts ultra-ripe citrus and orchard fruits balanced by stimulating acidity. This finishes with outstanding length and is spicy with lingering tropical melon notes. While the 2021 comes across as sweet, it's just a trick of the acidity and fruit, as this finished at only 1.2 grams of residual sugar." Vinous
"Spiced apples and pears with hints of peach pit, crushed almonds, dried lemon peel and the scent of summer flowers. Creamy and smooth with medium to full body, refreshed by herbs and savoury undertones. Long and racy." James Suckling

“Sigar” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2018
Livio Felluga's new crus come from massal selection. For this purpose, selected vines are reproduced in particularly advantageous locations in order to renew vineyards with especially high-quality vines and to further improve the quality of individual varietal wines.
Livio Felluga often stood in the evening twilight, his gaze fixed on the sky, with a cigar, watching the weather. The Friulano vines from which this cru comes were planted as early as 1963, producing medium-sized, loose-grained grapes. Yeast ageing and maturation in terracotta tanks give Sigar its depth and pronounced spiciness and minerality. Golden yellow with greenish nuances. In the complex bouquet fine saffron spice, candied lemon peel, dried apricots and lemon peel. The drink is grippy, compact and fresh with a seductive spiciness and salty note, then balsamic notes in the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

“San Zuan” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2021
"I think it's safe to say that Serena Palazzolo and her husband Christian Patat are at the top of their game, which means that the wines of Ronco del Gnemiz are among the best made in Friuli today. There is a lot to choose from here, because the transparency of the terroir is paramount. It may be easier to sell and market one or two Sauvignons, Chardonnay or Friulano wines, but the differences between each hill, each site and the age of each vineyard create such unique expressions that it would be a shame not to produce all six.
Standing on the hill where this winery is located, looking out over Rosazzo in the Colli Orientali, it becomes clear why these vineyard designations are so important to the future of the region. These hills rise and fall like bubbles rising from the earth and dropping to the horizon. I can imagine a winemaker's fascination with each of these unique sites. If you were to make a short list of the best producers in Friuli, you should put Ronco del Gnemiz at the top of the list." Vinous
San Zuan is an attractive, well-proportioned white made from 100% Friulano grapes. Complex, spicy bouquet of white peaches and pears, flowers, crushed rock and a subtle earthiness with notes of ginger and flint. Full and balanced on the palate, yet elegant, with some salty minerality, a hint of candied lemons, great length and nice ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Friulano San Zuan opens with a honeyed sweetness as white flowers, crisp green melon and confectionary spices fill the senses. This is round and supple on the palate, with vividly ripe orchard fruits nicely offset by bright acidity. It finishes with a lingering sweetness offset by spicy citrus tones. Beautifully ripe and concentrated, yet with stunning acidity, the 2021 San Zuan is a real head-turner." Vinous

The site near Buttrio, where the grapes of the autochthonous grape variety Friulano come from, belongs, together with Rosazzo, to the Grand Crus of the Friuli Colli Orientali appellation. Here there are not only no regulations, but also a lean, loose marl soil, which ensures extremely small yields every year. In good vintages, however, one is rewarded all the more for this: the volume and fruit concentration, the lower acidity and the unmistakable saltiness of the wines will lead to pleasurable heights after a few years of bottle ageing that will make lovers of complex, energetic whites giddy. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Friulano Buri Bellaria 2020 is so pretty and perfumed, it smells like a basket of freshly picked flowers with hints of pear and chamomile. It is fleshy and enveloping, with a nice lift of acidity that enlivens the ripe peaches and melons that seduce the senses. It leaves the mouth watering and finishes remarkably fresh and spicy, with a hint of ginger that slowly tapers off." Vinous

“Zitelle Pesarin” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2018
As always, Paolo Meroi has vinified a great Friulano with classic proportions, of which one can only get hold of a bottle with difficulty due to a total production of just 1,000 bottles. As always from a microsite, this white convinces with its perfectly knit balance of fine peach notes, pear, green melon and a little honey, its vibrant acid wire and a remarkable freshness and length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, light straw yellow. Opens with fine wood notes, some light caramel, then of fresh yellow apple, rich herbal spice in the background. Lush and rich on the palate, very good concentration, fine ripe fruit, but still noticeable wood overhang on the back end, needs further ripening." Falstaff

Antonio Bragato, born in Germany but with an absolute Friulian identity, joined forces 20 years ago with Gianni Maccari, who was cellar master at Livio Felluga for many years and founded his own winery Ronco della Rocca at the beginning of the millennium. Maccari, who has a degree in agronomy and Oenologist, is considered one of the best-trained viticultural experts in Friuli. The profound knowledge of his own 12 hectares of vineyards as well as the leased plots and the radical precision in the execution of every operation characterise the clear style and the reliable quality of the wines that Antonio Bragato creates there together with him.
From the 2019 vintage, Antonio Bragato's wine experiment enters a new era. Since then, the team has relied on an even more rigorous selection of the oldest vines from the coolest and best sites. The results of the "New Edition" can truly be seen and tasted. They are even more radical in complexity and finesse. We are pleased to be able to offer our customers the smallest editions of these wines, which confirm the many years of work and experience of the two quality fanatics!
Praephylloxera (literally: before phylloxera) comes from Friulano vines over 110 years old. Nutty-floral nose with notes of peach, rose petals, lime blossom, hawthorn, a hint of marzipan. Very dense with full soft body, elegant drinking flow. Great aromatic correspondence and length with fine acidity and light tannin on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"100% Tocai Friulano from up to 110-year-old vines with no roots. The mineral, well-founded bouquet reveals wonderful floral notes reminiscent of hawthorn and light flowers, delicately framed by ethereal notes, but also yellow stone fruit such as yellow peach compote and a touch of gooseberry. In the mouth it really explodes with a gigantic melt and then also shows delicate notes of white roses with fine acidity, seems to unite opposites, spicy final and you can literally feel the power and concentration of the old, rootless vines." Weinwisser
"Pleasant on the nose, fresh lemons, gooseberries, peach, hay, almonds, subtle marzipan. On the palate elegant with fine acidity, fresh fruit, lemons, gooseberries, fine spice and nice tannin on the finish. A versatile food companion that can still mature." Falstaff
"You could almost mistake this Friulano from old vines for a great Chardonnay from a warmer region (think low acidity). The chalky minerality and fine oak give structure and balance to this remarkable wine, the finish is long and complex with a hint of rose." James Suckling

“Buri Bellaria” Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2022
The site near Buttrio, where the grapes of the autochthonous Friulano grape variety originate, is one of the Grand Crus of the Friuli Colli Orientali appellation together with Rosazzo. Not only are there no regulations here, but also a poor, loose marl soil that ensures extremely low yields every year. In good vintages, however, the rewards are all the greater: the volume and fruit concentration, the lower acidity and the unmistakable salinity of the wines will lead to enjoyable heights after a few years of bottle ageing, making lovers of complex, energetic white wines dizzy. SUPERIORE.DE
"I think it's safe to say that Serena Palazzolo and her husband Christian Patat are at the top of their game, which means that the wines from Ronco del Gnemiz are among the best produced in Friuli today. The choice is vast, as the transparency of the terroir is paramount here. It may be easier to sell and market one or two Sauvignons, Chardonnays or Friulano wines, but the differences between the individual hills, the individual sites and the age of the individual vineyards create such unique expressions that it would be a shame not to produce all six.
When you stand on the hill on which this vineyard is located and look out over the Rosazzo in the Colli Orientali, it becomes clear why these vineyard designations are so important for the future of the region. These hills rise and fall like bubbles, rising from the earth and dropping to the horizon. I can imagine how fascinated a winemaker would be by each of these unique sites. If you make a short list of the best producers in Friuli, you should put Ronco del Gnemiz at the top of the list." Vinous

The 2021 Friuli Colli Orientali Friulano Zitelle Crostone plays its best cards in the mouth, where the wine delivers a silky richness that is firm and strong. The true fibre of the wine is finely knit. This inner tension frames the grape's honey, pear and green melon flavours. Like most of Meroi's other white wines, this wine is fermented in oak and then aged in barriques for ten months. There are only 1,000 bottles. SUPERIORE.DE

“Mario Schiopetto” Friulano Collio DOC 2021
"M" stands for Mario Schiopetto. This is the wine that the children have dedicated to their father for years and it is the undisputed white flagship of the winery. This exceptional Friulano with a dash of Riesling seduces with elegant aromas of white flowers, a little smoke and spirited fruit. Ingeniously balanced, fresh and of considerable length and great ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dried peach, mango and pear with some melon. Flint, too. Full-bodied, tight and focused center-palate with density and energy at the same time. Spiced pear and matchstick at the end. Very complex and complete. From 60-year-old vines in a single plot of Collio." James Suckling

Lovers of Friuli certainly know it as Tocai or Tocai Friulano. And if you listen to some of the older winegrowers in the Cormons area, you would never think that this grape variety could not actually come from there.
However, vine researchers found out that the variety originated in the Bordelais and was formerly blended with Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. Even though it is practically extinct around Bordeaux, it is Sauvignonasse, which could be freely translated as Sauvignon-like. Which is why it used to be often confused, especially in South America, where it was often placed between Sauvignon blanc and then actually resulted in a mixed set.
For Friuli, however, it is now simply one of the most important grape varieties. Why they were originally called Tocai or Tocai Friulano is controversial. There are countless stories. It is said that the grape variety was brought from Tokaj by a count who loved the Tokaj. Other stories tell of seedlings that were brought from Friuli to Hungary in the 13th century. All the other stories are probably fictional, too, because the grape variety has only been native to Friuli since the 19th century and has nothing to do with the Hungarian grape variety Furmint. Since 2007, Tocai may no longer appear on the label in order to avoid confusion with Tokaj, since then only Friulano has been on the label.
Friulano matures relatively early and is susceptible to botrytis, mildew and ESCA in humid summers. You therefore have to invest a lot of work in the vineyards. Almost always intense in colour, with rich gold, usually quite full-bodied, with herbal spices, yellow fruit aromas and delicate almond flavour, Friulano is quite typical and easy to recognise even in blind tastings. DNA analyses have not yet been able to identify any known parent vines, only the assumption of some ampelographers that it is Sauvignonasse was confirmed. However, Friulano is the cross partner of the Italian new breeds Fleurtai and Soreli.
Worldwide there are not even 4,500 hectares of the grape variety, 3,000 of which are in Italy alone. In addition to Friuli Venezia Giulia, it is still present in small quantities in Lazio, Lombardy and Veneto, where it is found as Tai in some DOC and DOCG wines. SUPERIORE.DE
