"San Zuan" is a manifesto of Friulano and one of the great interpretations of this indigenous grape variety. The vines are planted in a south-facing single vineyard above San Giovanni al Natisone, characterised by the typical Ponca soils of marl and sandstone. Here, where the warm days of the Collio meet cool downdraughts from the Julian Alps, grapes with an impressive aromatic density and an exciting structure are produced. The 2022 vintage was harmonious: sufficient rainfall in spring, a warm, dry summer and cool nights during the ripening phase. The grapes were harvested strictly selectively by hand, gently pressed and fermented and matured in large, used wooden barrels. The wine matured on the fine lees for several months, gaining depth without losing its characteristic clarity.

Bright straw yellow with a greenish tinge. The bouquet is delicate yet complex: yellow pear, candied citrus fruit and acacia blossom, with hints of almond, fennel, delicate spice and a touch of flint. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with a smooth texture, vibrant acidity and that typical bitter almond note that makes Friulano so unmistakable. The final is long, precise and delicately flavoured. "San Zuan" is a Friulano with great inner balance and expressiveness that captures the essence of its grape variety and location. "I think it's safe to say that Serena Palazzolo and her husband Christian Patat are at the top of their game, which means that the wines from Ronco del Gnemiz are among the best produced in Friuli today. The choice is vast, as the transparency of the terroir is paramount here. It may be easier to sell and market one or two Sauvignons, Chardonnays or Friulano wines, but the differences between the individual hills, the individual sites and the age of the individual vineyards create such unique expressions that it would be a shame not to produce all six.

When you stand on the hill on which this vineyard is located and look out over the Rosazzo in the Colli Orientali, it becomes clear why these vineyard designations are so important for the future of the region. These hills rise and fall like bubbles, rising from the earth and dropping to the horizon. I can imagine how fascinated a winemaker would be with each of these unique sites. If you make a short list of the best producers in Friuli, you should put Ronco del Gnemiz at the top of the list.
