Chardonnay doesn't really need an origin. The world drinks it everywhere, it adapts, it works. This is precisely its problem – and this is exactly where it so often fails. Those who grow it in the Aosta Valley, on granite moraine between 600 and 800 metres above sea level, with short summers, long winters and temperatures that drop to extremes at night, ask a different question: what happens to this variety when the mountain has the last word?

The Charrère family has been cultivating them since 1991. Their vineyards in Aymavilles and Saint-Christophe lie on loose granite moraine soils – sand predominates, complemented by silt and limestone, the skeleton is pronounced. South, south-east and north-east exposures ensure a differentiated ripening pattern across the terraces. 6 hectares, Guyot training, 7,500 plants per hectare, hand-picked in the second half of September. In the cellar: gentle whole bunch pressing, controlled fermentation at 14 °C in steel, three months sur lies.

Brilliant straw yellow colour. The nose is restrained and precise: delicate floral aromas, banana, white plum, a hint of citrus peel. A surprise on the palate – soft on the palate, salty on the finish, with a mineral depth that you wouldn't expect from an unwooded Chardonnay. The mountain speaks. Quietly, but clearly. SUPERIORE.DE
