Autumn 2018 began with bad press. After the glowing vintages of 2015, 2016 and the tough 2017 came a cool, rainy year – and the experts shrugged their shoulders. But if you listened carefully, you could hear something subtle: elegance. The quiet kind. The kind you don't immediately recognise. San Filippo lies east of Montalcino, at 260 to 280 metres above sea level, in a gently north-east facing hollow. Here, the vines grow in red clay over limestone and slate – soils that absorb heat and retain freshness. 2018 was not a year for muscles. But for nerves. Fermentation in steel and concrete, ageing in large wooden barrels – paolo Caciorgna keeps his hand steady. No wood that drowns out. No intervention to correct. The wine should speak.

Ruby red in the glass, almost transparent. Dried rose blossom, rosehip, a hint of orange zest, with slate minerality and fresh herbs underneath. Medium-bodied on the palate, but with polished tannins, invigorating acidity and a long, salty finish that doesn't let go. Not a wine for the impatient. One for those who know: The quiet beauty of 2018 is maturing better than predicted and already promises great enjoyment. SUPERIORE.DE

"Although this wine contains a small proportion of fruit from the estate's La Lucère vineyard, it is mainly made from a lower-lying, north and north-east-facing plot in the immediate vicinity of the winery. An abundance of sweet herbs - from sage to lavender - gives way to forest scrub and flint. On the palate, the wine is not yet as pronounced as on the nose, although a core of concentrated red cherry lies in wait. The tannins are powerful and somewhat wood-accentuated, but they smooth out on the finish. The 2018 should develop well after another year in the bottle." Decanter
