Vigna Andrea is the centrepiece of Clelia Romano's oeuvre – a single-vineyard Taurasi named after her son, grown at an altitude of 500 metres on calcareous and clayey soils near Lapio. In a vintage like 2019, which brought cool nights and long growing seasons, this wine shows all its aristocratic depth. The Aglianico is rigorously selected, partially destemmed, fermented in steel and then matured for at least 24 months in French barriques before a long maturation in the bottle.
Deep dark ruby colour with a purple rim in the glass. The aroma is complex and of cool noblesse: Black cherry, violets, eucalyptus, graphite and a fine spice of cedar wood and tobacco leaves. Dense and powerful on the palate, with pithy tannins, elegant and fresh at the same time. The ageing is noticeable but perfectly integrated. Long finish: balsamic notes, herbs, smoke and an impressive mineral signature that impressively emphasises the volcanic terroir.
Vigna Andrea is not a Taurasi monument, but a Taurasi of deep tension, dignity and ageing potential – a solitaire that rewards patience and interprets Aglianico in its noblest way. A great southern Italian, far from any exaggeration, but full of inwardness and substance. SUPERIORE.DE
"A distinctive red with a rich note of fresh loamy earth and hints of dark chocolate and sage, layered with flavours of dried raspberry, blackberry coulis and macerated black cherry. The wine shows a spicy, sanguine note that reins in the rich fruit flavours, as well as a frame of bright orange peel acidity. Taut, chalky tannins firm up the finish. Let it open up in the glass or decant it." Wine Spectator
"The Taurasi Vigna Andrea 2019 tantalises the senses with sweet exotic spices and cedar wood shavings that fade into medicinal blackberries and cherries. It is silky and polished on the palate. A lively acidity accompanies the ripe wild berry fruit, while the fine tannins slowly build up towards the end. The 2019 finishes lightly structured with lingering candied sweetness, tactile mineral tones and a hint of blood orange. The 2019 is deceptively accessible today, but wonderfully balanced for a long and successful development." Vinous
