In 1996, Elisabetta Geppetti purchased a hillside near Pereta. She named it Poggio Valente – the capable hill, the brave hill. A name that says it all. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 280 metres, facing south-west, on sandy soils over sandstone bedrock with clay interlayers – a soil that lends the Sangiovese precision and elegance rather than weight and power. Elisabetta wanted something different here: a single-varietal Sangiovese cru in the Burgundian tradition, a wine that speaks of its vineyard and nothing else. In 2014, she took a decisive step: Poggio Valente left the Morellino appellation and has since been classified as Toscana IGT. This is no step backwards – quite the opposite. It is a statement. This wine is greater than its designation of origin, and Elisabetta did not want the lack of international recognition of an appellation to limit her ambition.
In 2019, her son Ettore, Oenologist qualified Oenologist from Pisa, took over responsibility for the vineyard and the winery. The Poggio Valente 2023 is his best vintage to date. 30 to 35 days' contact with the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by 15 months in 500- andLiters French oakLiters. No oaky notes, just structure and depth.
In the glass, it displays a brilliant ruby red colour with delicate garnet highlights. The nose is complex and displays an elegance not often found in the Maremma: red rose petals, black cherry, blood orange, blackberry, juniper berry, with a subtle undertone of wild scrub, herbs and woodland undergrowth. On the palate, it is full-bodied and dense, with silky tannins that betray the long maceration periods, lively Sangiovese acidity and a long, spicy finish. A wine that is already a delight today – and has many years ahead of it. SUPERIORE.DE
"A medium ruby colour with a lighter rim. On the nose, very fruit-forward with aromas of chocolate, raisins, cherries and elderberries. On the palate, full-bodied and lively, with delicate tannins and subtle oak notes in the background. A lingering finish." Falstaff
"The 2023 Poggio Valente is a blend of sweet red cherry, mint, pipe tobacco, dried herbs, liquorice, mocha and a hint of French oak. I'd give it a year or two in the bottle to let it mellow. Floral, savoury and earthy notes add the finishing touches." Vinous
"The 2023 vintage is youthful, tightly structured and firm, yet generously fruity with lovely cherry and strawberry aromas. The oak is still quite dominant, so give it time to harmonise and develop." Decanter
"A robust and lovely red wine with aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, sage, rosemary and thyme. Medium-bodied with lively acidity and firm tannins, which lend it length and deliciousness. Made entirely from Sangiovese. It can be enjoyed now, but it will be even better in three or four years' time." James Suckling
"The Poggio Valente 2023 is made from 100% Sangiovese and was bottled in June 2025. The 2023 vintage proved challenging across much of Tuscany, as there was persistent rain in the spring and mildew severely affected the Merlot grapes and other early-ripening varieties; yet in the southern Maremma, conditions were more balanced thanks to the naturally well-ventilated site. Poggio Valente benefits from its location between two hills with the sea right on its doorstep, which ensures constant air circulation and lends the wines a luminous quality. The Sangiovese is grown on heavier soils rich in clay and limestone, which lend the wines structure and depth. The estate is in the process of refining its ageing techniques by switching from smaller oak barrels to larger vessels and ageing more than 50% of the wine in 'botti grandi' to achieve a crisper and more transparent expression. The plan for this wine is working out wonderfully." Wine Advocate
