The name carries three thousand years of history: the Etruscans called this land "Fèlsina" long before it was called Tuscany. When the shipowner Domenico Poggiali acquired the estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga in 1966, it was primarily known for its olive oil – there were just two and a half hectares of vines on the 400 hectares. The Vin Santo epitomises the philosophy of the estate: respect for tradition, but no fear of the unconventional. Unlike most producers, Felsina not only uses Trebbiano and Malvasia, but also adds a proportion of Sangiovese – the grape variety that made the estate world-famous with Rancia and Fontalloro. The Sangiovese gives the sweet wine structure and colour, a hint of tannin and the elegance that characterises Felsina's wines.

The grapes come from the Valli and Il Poggiolo vineyards and are dried on mats after rigorous selection – until January, sometimes February of the following year. The must then ferments in sealed Liters barrels containing the "madre": that mysterious, thick substance of yeast and residue from previous vintages that gives the Vin Santo its complexity. The wine matures for seven years in the attic, exposed to the temperature fluctuations of the seasons – hot summers, cold winters, a natural rhythm that knows no hurry.

It has a golden yellow colour with copper reflections in the glass. The nose opens with peach and apricot, pineapple and candied fruit, accompanied by honey and roasted walnuts. It is warm and full on the palate, but never heavy – the acidity carries the sweetness, the wood structures without dominating. A Vin Santo that proves why this wine was once called holy. SUPERIORE.DE
