Siepi has always been more than just a vineyard – it was a vision waiting to become reality. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, this mystical place lies amidst dense oak forests near Castellina in Chianti: ten hectares of pure magic on Alberese soils, which even the ancient Romans knew how to appreciate. Paradoxically, the story of Siepi 2023 begins with one of the most challenging vintages of recent times. A mild winter with scant rainfall, followed by a rainy spring that pushed the Mazzei winemakers to their limits. And yet, or perhaps precisely because of this, a wine emerged that impressively embodies the estate's philosophy: "Great vineyards shine in difficult vintages."

In the late 1980s, Lapo Mazzei recognised the incredible potential of this unique microclimate and embarked on a bold experiment: Merlot as the perfect complement to Sangiovese – a revolutionary decision for Chianti Classico, one that remains unique in the region to this day. Here, nestled amongst the protective woods at an ideal altitude, these two grape varieties were intended not merely to coexist, but to "speak with one voice", as Giovanni Mazzei so poetically puts it. The 2023 Siepi, made in equal parts from Merlot and Sangiovese, tells the story of an unusual vintage in which the Merlot initially takes the lead. Its velvety roundness, power and spice envelop the palate before, slowly, very slowly, the Sangiovese comes to the fore, lending the wine that lively acidity which makes it so seductively drinkable. 

In the glass, this is a monumental wine of deep ruby red, with aromas that shift between dark chocolate, ripe plums and wild herbs. On the palate, the full complexity of this extraordinary terroir unfolds: powerful and structured, with a finish that seems to stretch into eternity.
