Nestled in the amphitheatre of the Tuscan hills of Castellina lies a single vineyard site known as Il Poggiale, whose history dates back to 1968, when Paolo Panerai brought together four historic poderi to create a visionary project. Here, on the limestone-rich soils at altitudes of between 350 and 400 metres, only Sangioveto – the finest local variant of Sangiovese – thrives, complemented by just a few% of the indigenous varieties Canaiolo and Colorino.

An intense ruby red with vibrant highlights that already hint at its concentration. The bouquet opens with the classic violet note characteristic of Chianti Classico, followed by dark cherry aromas and a mineral depth that seems to speak directly from the limestone subsoil. On the palate, the true greatness of this cru is revealed: fresh acidity and juicy minerality dominate the initial taste, whilst a velvety texture unfolds on the mid-palate, supported by ripe but never overpowering tannins. The finish is remarkably long, with the fruity notes blossoming once more and leaving behind a balsamic elegance.

Il Poggiale is more than just a Chianti Classico Riserva – it is the very essence of what Sangioveto is capable of achieving on this special terroir. A wine that has consistently received top marks from international critics since 1979 and which demonstrates why Paolo Panerai is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Chianti Classico.
