"After working with Sangiovese for ten years, I finally decided to produce a single-varietal wine. For too long I had unjustly relegated this grape variety to a marginal role in my production. It is not only the expression of pure Tuscan tradition, but also the most technically difficult grape, capable of producing great emotions. The name (Der Knappe) is a tribute to its famous teacher, the Sangiovese pioneer of Bolgheri, Cavaliere Michele Satta, to whom I will always be grateful." Fabio Motta

In honour of his father-in-law Michele Satta, who is credited with the revaluation of Sangiovese in Bolgheri, Fabio Motto has created his own interpretation. His Sangiovese Lo Scudiere smells of dark fruit, mixed with notes of scorched earth, cedar wood, spicy tobacco and dried roses. Although you don't get the same vertical lift or complexity in Bolgheri that you would expect from a Sangiovese further inland, the richer soils where orchards were once planted can work very well with the challenging variety. Lo Scudiere is made from 25% whole bunches and aged for a year in truncated cone-shaped 30-hectolitre vats. Around 3,300 bottles are bottled each year. SUPERIORE.DE
