On the spectacular steep slope of the Römigberg, where Lake Kaltern stretches out like a mirror at the foot of the vines, lies the heart of the Lageder revolution. Here, on the plot that has always borne the name "Herz" – Latin for "Cor" – Alois Lageder dared to do the impossible in 1986: In an unprecedented act of courage, he planted South Tyrol's first large-scale vineyard using high-density planting on a wire trellis, thereby radically breaking with the centuries-old pergola tradition. What began as a scandal became a legend. His engagement with winemakers from all over the world – including the legendary Robert Mondavi from California and several château owners from Bordeaux – had inspired Lageder to make this visionary decision. He recognised that the steep south-southeast-facing slopes at altitudes of between 250 and 330 metres, characterised by stony, gravelly dolomitic limestone over ancient moraine deposits from the Third Ice Age, possessed the potential to produce world-class wines. Here, where warm Mediterranean influences meet Alpine coolness and intense sunshine meets geological formations dating back millions of years, conditions of unique complexity are created.

Cor Römigberg embodies the ideal of the self-contained farm in its purest form: cows and oxen graze amongst the vines and olive trees, whilst biodynamic farming practices, adhering to the strictest Demeter guidelines, set the rhythm. This harmonious symbiosis between people, animals and plants shapes every aspect of winemaking. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon blends with 10% Petit Verdot to create a blend of exceptional concentration. The vinification follows principles tried and tested over decades: spontaneous fermentation on the skins in wooden barrels and stainless-steel tanks, partly using whole bunches, followed by ageing in small and large wooden barrels for several months. Subsequent bottle ageing of around one year completes the development of this monumental Cabernet.

The result is pure elegance combined with power: a deep purple hue speaks to its concentration, whilst complex aromas of black cherries, cassis and blackberries, alongside earthy, autumnal tones, hints of balsamic vinegar and crushed stones, unfold into a symphony for the senses. On the palate, it is powerful yet possesses a lightness of foot that gives the wine a magnificent lift on final.
