Feudo di Mezzo is perhaps the largest Contrada in the entire Etna DOC – characterised by a consistent style, yet with marked differences in quality from plot to plot. Marco de Grazia compares it to the Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy: a vast territory capable of producing great wine in its finest parts, and merely good wine in its weaker ones. The best plot in Feudo di Mezzo – de Grazia's plot – is called: Il Quadro delle Rose. The Rose Plot. Castiglione di Sicilia, 650 metres, north-facing. 1.5 hectares, vines aged between 40 and 80 years on deep, ash-rich volcanic soils. 5,500 bottles per vintage. Il Quadro delle Rose is always the first vineyard to be harvested – and de Grazia explains why this shapes its character: the earlier harvest yields the most open, generous and soft wines of the entire estate.

Of all the crus, it has the velvety-smooth profile, the most delicate tannins and the most enveloping bouquet. "Its character is ethereal," as de Grazia puts it, with autumnal notes in its spicy, resinous bouquet. A wine that does not strive for power, but for texture, for depth without heaviness. And a wine that takes on a life of its own as it ages: its "twilight nature" gains in luminosity over time.

A brilliant ruby red. The bouquet is velvety and autumnal – red cherry, rosehip, spices, cedar wood, a hint of resin and undergrowth. On the palate, it is exceptionally smooth, with almost whisper-soft tannins, precise and lingering acidity, and a warm, persistent final. "The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2024 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose comes from a distinctive old-vine parcel within Feudo di Mezzo, Etna's largest contrada. The name refers to a traditional cadastral division of approximately 6,000 square meters. Once divided between two families, this became one of the largest contiguous holdings on Etna. The vineyard, dotted with peach, quince and prickly pear, is planted to vines now approximately 65 years old. Fruit from vines younger than 50 is excluded from this bottling. It is also among the estate's first parcels harvested, generally around October 4 to 6. The 2024 has a darker cast to its fruit and a heavier center of gravity. "This pisses me off", Marco de Grazia jokes. Immediately after being racked off the skins, the wine was almost complete. There is a frustrating effortlessness to it. Chalky tannins and ample fruit convey the exuberant character of the vintage, yet the wine remains composed. Il Quadro delle Rose also has a proven ability to age beautifully." Wine Advocate

"Aromas of strawberry, caramel and cedar with a hint of vanilla are enticing. Medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins and a juicy, slightly firm finish.
