Gulfi's top Pinò is a pure expression of Pinot Nero from Etna. When the Etna appellation began its rise about ten years ago, many producers pledged to grow the Burgundian grape variety on the charred slopes of this mighty volcano. However, significant plantings of Pinot Nero never materialised, as many winegrowers opted instead for the indigenous Nerello Mascalese grape variety. Gulfi remains faithful to Pinot Nero on Etna, with the grapes for Pinò coming from 800 metres above sea level on the northern slope of the volcano.

It opens with a dark, saturated colour and heavy aromas of dried cherries and cassis, with a hint of floral notes. Its mouthfeel is polished and fresh, and on the palate Pinò shows all the characteristics of a slender, compact but very intense wine with plenty of tension and energy. Its slightly bitter flavour, a combination of cherry stones and sour citrus fruit, lingers until the tense final. Ultimately, this wine is more an expression of Etna than of the grape variety, its proud yet cheerful personality making it irresistible. SUPERIORE.DE

The nose is clearly reminiscent of cranberry jam, cinnamon pod, ginger, herbal tea, with some dried tomato, wild berries, gentle smoky and earthy tones rounding off the bouquet.
