Gioia del Colle is not the Primitivo that the world thinks it knows. The Apulian Murgia plateau lies at an altitude of 380 to 400 metres – higher, cooler and windier than Salento, with stony, loamy soils, marked temperature fluctuations and a finesse in the Primitivo that would never emerge from the heat of the south. The DOC is regarded as one of Apulia’s most exciting premium regions and has attracted the attention of the international wine world in recent years. Amidst dry stone walls, cherry trees and limestone cliffs, Leone de Castris works here under the name ‘Masseria Donna Coletta’ – a project that is reinventing the centuries-old family without forgetting its roots.

The ‘Donna-Coletta’ range comprises several expressions of this DOC. The Fontana di Vite – the source of the vine – is the latest addition to the family, on the market since the 2024 vintage, and the gateway to this premier league: aged exclusively in stainless steel, no woody notes, no heaviness. A Primitivo that showcases what this DOC is also capable of: young, fresh, surprisingly crisp, and a wine in a class of its own. Its distinctive aromatic hallmark is the ‘Ciliegia Ferrovia’ – the ‘cherry railway grape variety’, symbol of the appellation, once transported by rail to the markets of northern Italy, today the sensory heart of these wines.

A brilliant ruby red. The bouquet offers intense red fruit, dominated by the unmistakable note of Ferrovia cherries. On the palate, it is juicy and well-balanced, with a pleasant freshness and a final that echoes the crispness of a freshly picked cherry.
