The history of Selvarossa began shortly after the turn of the millennium, when Angelo Maci – the fourth generation of an old family of winegrowers and founder of Due Palme – put his vision of uncompromising quality production into practice. What began in 1989 with fifteen members now brings together over a thousand winegrowers, who collectively cultivate 2,500 hectares of vineyards in the provinces of Brindisi, Lecce and Taranto. The name "Red Forest" refers to the characteristic red-coloured, loamy soils around Cellino San Marco, rich in minerals, graphite and iron oxides, which give the terroir its distinctive character.

Selvarossa pays homage to the indigenous grape varieties of Salento: Negroamaro – "niuru maru" in the local dialect, meaning "black bitter" – has been rooted in this soil for three thousand years and delivers that deep, dark, almost black colour, the robust tannins and the tart, spicy notes that justify its name. Malvasia Nera provides a counterpoint of elegance and soft, velvety fruit. Both grape varieties are cultivated using the traditional Alberello system, that archaic bush-training method without wire trellises, which offers the vines protection from the scorching heat and naturally limits the yield. The grapes for the Selvarossa come from the oldest, most select plots and are harvested by hand into small crates at perfect ripeness – some even slightly overripe – to maximise concentration and sugar content.

An intense, impenetrable ruby red with scarlet, almost amaranth-red highlights. The bouquet reveals an opulent, multi-layered array of aromas: ripe cherries and cherry jam, plums, dates and blackcurrants, accompanied by warm spicy notes of cinnamon, cloves, dark chocolate and liquorice. Balsamic hints mingle with subtle tobacco notes and a touch of vanilla from the oak ageing. On the palate, it is a revelation: thick and full-bodied, dense and powerful, the Selvarossa unfolds with rich, ripe fruit and a structure that combines power and elegance. The tannins are robust but never overpowering – supple, velvety and perfectly integrated. A lively freshness runs through the opulent body, preventing any sense of heaviness. The final is long, spicy, poetic – a wine that conceals the sweet, inviting heart of Salento beneath its tough exterior. SUPERIORE.DE
