“Solea” Bianco Langhe DOC 2023

The fact that one of Italy's most fascinating white wines is produced in the very kingdom of Nebbiolo is one of Piedmont's most delightful paradoxes. Even more paradoxical: it is grown on Pira, that legendary monopoly position which is actually reserved for monumental Barolo. Luca Roagna has planted Chardonnay here, not far from the new winery – a statement of freedom amidst tradition. The 2023 vintage is a cuvée comprising 80% Chardonnay and 20% white-fermented Nebbiolo. The vinification follows old European principles: pre-fermentative oxidation, followed by spontaneous fermentation in wooden vats with the vineyard's own yeasts over ten days. Two years' ageing on the fine lees in neutral oak – without any racking.

Pale golden-yellow with greenish highlights. The nose unfolds with a waxy, complex character, almost reminiscent of great Chenin Blancs: fennel pollen and artichoke mingle with quince, persimmon and yellow pear, interwoven with marjoram and dried wild herb hay. On the palate, that unmistakable Roagna signature: not a trace of creaminess, but rather crystalline precision, a stony texture and a chalky, saline tension that carries the wine, with its subtle bitter notes, right through to final long final.
