A handful of fresh cherries. Bite into them. Juice running down your fingers. Tasting Gallina 2020 is an immediate, sensual, irresistible experience. Among the Roagna-Barbareschi, it is the seducer, the wine that does not impress with its austere grandeur, but captivates with its open charm. The family has been cultivating a plot in Neive's most famous MGA since 2014. The calcareous clay soil with a high proportion of sand gives the Nebbiolo here the silky finesse that distinguishes Gallina from its more austere neighbours. Antonio Galloni calls the site "the source of the roundest and most accessible Barbareschi in the municipality". Wines that can be drunk early and yet mature for decades.
A brilliantly bright cherry red colour with rusty reflections announces what follows: a nose of unexpected darkness – roasted coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate – but always on a cool, chalky foundation. Cinnamon and cardamom mingle with sour cherry and wild strawberry, Meyer lemon and bergamot set vibrant accents, the scent of pine wafts through the glass. On the palate, this savoury, juicy centre sets the wine apart from its Pajè and Albesani siblings. Silky tannins, lively acidity, saline lightness: everything flows. The finish combines earthy notes with red fruit and mineral tension. A Barbaresco whose strength lies in its elegance. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Barbaresco Gallina 2020 is the most open Barbaresco in Luca Roagna's range. Crushed flowers, mint, cherry, sweet red cherry and cinnamon - all of this flows from the glass. Soft, silky contours contribute to the wine's great charm. harvestwill find it hard to keep their hands off this jewel of a wine." Vinous
"This liquid red offers plenty of ripe fruit and a supple texture with flavours of cherries, strawberries, rhubarb, minerals, tar and undergrowth. Lively and long, it is elegant overall, with driving acidity defining its linear profile. Although it is already enjoyable now, it will fully develop in a few years." Wine Spectator
