Sibi et paucis – for the few who understand that great wines are not in a hurry. Sandrone retains around 10 per cent of the production from each Aleste vintage and allows these bottles to mature for a full decade longer in his own cellar. What could have been released in September 2019 remains dormant until today – and is becoming something that goes beyond regular Barolo.

After ten years, the 2015 Aleste from Cannubi Boschis, the legendary sub-vineyard opposite the winery, shows what Luciano meant when he said that Nebbiolo only reveals its best character with time. The spontaneously fermented grapes, matured in Liters tonnaux, have long since left their youth behind.

Bright garnet red in the glass with dark orange reflections. The nose unfolds a fascinating tertiary aroma: camphor oil, Earl Grey tea, orange peel, dried cherries, fennel and meat spices. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with integrated, polished tannins and the balance that characterises mature Barolo. The final is long with notes of blackcurrant and black pepper – an Aleste on the way to its peak, drinkable now, but ready for further years of evolution. SUPERIORE.DE
