Some wines are named after vineyard sites, others after grape varieties. This one is named after a person: Domenico Staropoli, known as Mimmo, who tended the vineyards of Le Piane for many years. When he died, Christoph Künzli dedicated this wine to him – not as a sentimental gesture, but in recognition of the quiet work without which no great wine can be produced. The Mimmo is more than just a "little Boca". Its Nebbiolo components come from the same plots, are vinified to the same standards, and it is only after two years' barrel ageing that a tasting determines which components will become the Boca and which the Mimmo. The Nebbiolo is complemented by Croatina and Vespolina from century-old vines at Montalbano and Santuario. Twelve months in tonneaux, followed by twelve months in large Slavonian botti – time that you can really taste.

Ruby red with garnet-red highlights. On the nose, wild strawberries and cherries, along with liquorice, herbs and a hint of balsamic. On the palate, the 2023 vintage is approachable yet complex: mineral, with silky tannins and lively acidity that imparts both freshness and length. A blend of 85% Nebbiolo, 10% Croatina and 5% Vespolina, it captures the classic spirit of Alto Piemonte. Aged for two years in large oak casks, the wine is indeed pretty, with sweet aromas of summer cherry, wild berry, rosewater, orange peel and a hint of camphor ash. It is sturdy with medium-bodied richness that expands nicely across the mid-palate while maintaining the elegance that defines this blend of grapes. Drink it while the fruit is youthful and fresh."
