There are wines that tell stories. And then there are wines that are a story themselves. Kupra belongs to the second category. Its roots go deeper than the hundred-year-old Alberello vines from which it is made – they go back to Sardinian shepherds who travelled from Maremma across Lake Trasimeno to Apulia on their transhumance, bringing with them a grape variety they called "su burdu": the bastard, the foundling, the one who does not belong. Marco Casolanetti discovered this almost forgotten plot of land in the early 2000s, right next to his Montepulciano vines near Cupra Marittima – and immediately recognised that something special lay dormant here.
Bordò is the official name of the grape variety today, a biotype of Grenache that was almost extinct in the Marche region. Around 6,000 vines are planted on 1.5 hectares, some over a century old, with a view of the Adriatic Sea at an altitude of 400 metres. The yields are minimal – two grapes per vine, no more. In the cellar, Marco works like the old farmers: fermentation in raw cement eggs, then 30 months in two consecutive new barriques. No filtration, no compromises. In the end, 500 to 1,200 bottles are produced, depending on the vintage.
The 2021 shines in a delicate garnet red, almost transparent at the edges – not a powerhouse, but a wine of ethereal elegance. The nose opens with rose petals, rosehips and wild raspberries, followed by candied orange peel and a hint of Earl Grey. A surprise on the palate: interwoven and memorable, with fine but present tannins and a tension that makes the wine literally vibrate. The final is pithy and long, with a freshness reminiscent of Mediterranean scrub. A wine that does not want to please – but wants to be understood. Inimitable! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, delicate garnet red colour. Very appealing nose with notes of roses, rose hips and wild raspberries, plus some candied orange peel and tea. Interwoven and memorable on the palate, clearly defined fruit, good tension, opens with dense, present tannins, pithy on the final." Falstaff
