In 1961, after several failed attempts, Franco Ziliani, Count Guido Berlucchi and their friend Giorgio Lanciani sealed three thousand bottles of Pinot di Franciacorta, Italy's first sparkling wine produced using the traditional bottle-fermentation method. When they opened the bottles a year later, the wine was excellent, and with it the Franciacorta method was born. The '61' still bears this year in its name to this day. The cuvée, comprising 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Nero, comes from three estate-owned vineyards – Rovere, San Carlo and Ragnoli – densely planted with up to 10,000 vines per hectare. Selected plots are aged for six months in wooden barrels on the fine lees, before the cuvée spends at least five years in the bottle on the lees, with absolutely no dosage added after disgorging.

An intense straw-yellow colour with old-gold highlights, accompanied by a fine, creamy effervescence. Floral aromas give way to delicate citrus notes with a hint of candied fruit. On the palate, it is beautifully balanced, with well-measured acidity and a clear structure. A vintage Franciacorta that does full justice to the year of its founding. SUPERIORE.DE
