Next to the Villa della Torre in Fumane, this elegant testimony to the Italian Renaissance, lies a vineyard that awoke from its slumber in 1960. Giovanni Allegrini recognised the potential of the neglected terrain and began to recultivate it. In 1978, it became a wine in its own right and the name became the programme: Palazzo della Torre, a cru that brought Allegrini international fame. Six times in the Wine Spectator Top 100, the secret? In 1990, Franco Allegrini introduced an innovation that changed Valpolicella: double fermentation. Some of the grapes, Corvina, Rondinella and Sangiovese, undergo a short appassimento. The freshly fermented wine is then added to this dried marc, where a second fermentation begins. More elegant than Ripasso, more complex than classic Valpolicella.
The 2022 shows the result: dark cherries and ripe plums merge with forest floor notes, balsamic accents and a final that combines chocolate, coffee and a hint of violets. The acidity remains lively, the structure velvety – a wine for evenings when nobody wants to go home early. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red with a centre. Strong, berry notes, vanilla, wood, dark chocolate. Black cherries with air. Full-bodied on the palate, present tannin that is still somewhat green. Slightly astringent, medium length. Good Storage potential." Falstaff
"The 2022 Palazzo della Torre wafts up with a spicy mix of crushed violets, cedar box and cloves, giving way to dried black cherries. It opens with a pleasant inner sweetness balanced by crisp mineral tones and citrus-laced red berry fruits. This tapers off with excellent length and refinement, leaving the mouth salivating as a hint of tart blackberry fades." Vinous
"An intense wine with multilayered fruit, showing sour cherries, blackberries, plums, vibrant black pepper and nicely integrated vanilla. Chewy on the palate. Crisp, long acidity and firm, chalky tannins are well balanced with the fruit in the medium-bodied, savory finish." James Suckling
