The Petit Rouge grape variety is the backbone of the Aosta Valley. Anyone familiar with it will know it only as Torrette DOC – the region’s oldest and largest appellation. A red wine that has been a staple on the table for generations, just as much a given as the mountain cheese fondue served alongside it. The Charrère family knows this tradition better than most. And yet, in 2019, they made a different decision. No Torrette DOC. Instead, a Valle d'Aosta DOC rosé. The idea: the same indigenous variety, different clones, old vines – but vinified differently. Not as a red wine, but as something that captures the essence of the mountains in their lightest, freshest form.
The vineyards are situated in Aymavilles at an altitude of 700 metres, facing north-west, on loose sandy moraine, trained using the Guyot method, with 7,500 vines per hectare. Hand-harvested at the end of September. In the cellar: three hours' skin contact with chilled whole bunches in the press – no more, no less. Twelve days' fermentation at 14 °C in stainless steel, followed by two months on the lees. Everything is designed to ensure freshness and precision.
A brilliant, delicate dusky pink in the glass. The nose is floral and fruity: strawberry, redcurrant, white melon pulp. Fresh and lively on the palate, with notes of white peach, a fine structure, good acidity and the salty finish typical of Les Crêtes. This is no run-of-the-mill rosé. It is a wine that knows – and tastes – exactly where it comes from. SUPERIORE.DE
"A bright, shimmering pink. On the nose, cool fruit reminiscent of wild raspberries, with white pepper and a hint of Amalfi orange zest in the background. On the palate, it is fruit-driven and juicy, with a wonderful interplay of delicate creaminess and a lively acidity, finishing with a salty aftertaste." Falstaff
