    Italy's smallest wine-growing region does not do things by halves. The Aosta Valley lies nestled amongst the highest peaks of the Alps, traversed by the Dora Baltea, characterised by moraine soils left behind by glaciers, and by a climate that demands everything from the vines: short summers, long winters, and extreme temperature variations between day and night. Winegrowing here is not for the faint-hearted.

    The Charrère family has been cultivating it since 1750 – six generations who know this valley like few others. The Petite Arvine is their queen. It truly lives up to its name: small in berry, big in character. A late-ripening indigenous variety that grows in Aymavilles on loose, sandy moraine soils at altitudes of between 550 and 750 metres – west- and south-facing slopes, 6.5 hectares, Guyot training, 7,500 vines per hectare. The harvest takes place by hand in early October, when the berries have reached their peak aromatic ripeness. In the cellar: gentle whole-bunch pressing, controlled fermentation at 14 °C in stainless steel, two months' ageing on the fine lees.

    A brilliant straw-yellow colour in the glass. The nose opens with jasmine and peony, underpinned by ripe apple peel, citrus zest and a hint of white plum. On the palate, then, comes what Petite Arvine is famous for: a lively saltiness that invigorates the palate, underpinned by fresh acidity and delicate minerality that lingers long on the finish.
