Italy's smallest wine region doesn't do things by halves. The Aosta Valley lies wedged between the highest peaks of the Alps, crossed by the Dora Baltea, characterised by moraine soils left behind by glaciers and a climate that demands everything from the vines: short summers, long winters, extreme temperature differences between day and night. Viticulture here is not a decision for the faint-hearted.

The Charrère family has been meeting them since 1750 – six generations who know this valley like no other. The Petite Arvine is their queen. It bears its name with good reason: small in berry, big in character. A late-ripening indigenous variety that grows in Aymavilles on loose, sandy moraine soils between 550 and 750 metres above sea level – west and south exposure, 6.5 hectares, Guyot training, 7,500 plants per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand at the beginning of October, when the berries have reached their maximum aromatic ripeness. In the cellar: gentle whole bunch pressing, controlled fermentation at 14 °C in stainless steel, two months maturation on the fine lees.

Brilliant straw yellow in the glass. The nose opens with jasmine and peony, including ripe apple peel, citrus peel and a hint of white plum. On the palate, what Petite Arvine is famous for: a lively salinity that invigorates the palate, carried by fresh acidity and fine minerality that lingers for a long time.
