The Brunello di Montalcino "50 anni" is much more than just an anniversary bottling – it is Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini's emotional homage to half a century of Caparzo history and at the same time her legacy for the future. In 2020, the year of its 50th anniversary, she deliberately chose this exceptional vintage to embody the essence of what Caparzo has stood for since 1970: the combination of tradition and innovation in the service of one of the world's greatest terroirs.
This Brunello combines the best of Caparzo's unique position in Montalcino. As one of the few wineries that owns vineyards in almost all the important zones of the appellation, Caparzo can draw on an extraordinary range of terroirs. From the higher-lying sites in La Caduta with their slate-sandy soils to the Galestro formations of La Casa and the Pliocenic sedimentary soils of the Caparzo parent vineyard – each zone contributes its characteristic notes to this anniversary wine. The vinification follows Caparzo's uncompromising tradition: exclusively large Slavonian oak barrels, no barriques. "Absolutely the fruit is there", as Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini emphasises – the fruit takes centre stage, supported by slow, respectful ageing in traditional large wooden barrels. After at least two years of ageing in these 25 to 50 hectolitre barrels, further years of bottle ageing follow before the wine reaches perfection.
The 2020 "50 anni" presents itself as a radiant ruby red wine with garnet-coloured reflections – the characteristic Sangiovese colour that Elisabetta loves so much. The bouquet reveals all the complexity of the different terroirs: elegant notes of cherries and plums blend with spicy accents of pepper and cinnamon, while floral nuances and mineral notes emphasise the depth of the wine. The palate reveals a harmonious, well-balanced Brunello with silky, round tannins and exceptional persistence. A wine that not only celebrates Caparzo's 50-year history, but also holds the promise of the next fifty years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very fragrant, almost perfumed, red and dark cherries, cassis and blue berries as well as delicate floral notes. Slender, polished and pleasing on the palate, round, with fine, round tannins, sweet berries." Weinwisser
"Sparkling, bright ruby red colour. Intriguing nose, plums and cherries, some verbena in the background. Some blood orange on the palate, harmonious, lots of juice, ripe tannins and refreshing acidity structure, lingering, salty final." Falstaff
"This harmonious red wine shows plenty of energy and dimension, with a hint of spice framing the flavours of cherry, iron, red chalk and undergrowth. Its tannins are dense and present, but not intrusive." Wine Spectator
"The Caparzo 2020 Brunello di Montalcino offers plenty of fresh fruit with cherry and redcurrant to the fore. This vintage manages to offer us a very elegant and slender style. The flavours increase in volume over time, adding notes of blue flowers, roses and toasted coriander seeds. It finishes with a lean consistency, silky tannins and medium length." Wine Advocate
"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from the glass with a tantalising blend of crushed plums and wild berries, accented by lavender and floral notes of undergrowth. The wine displays a silky texture and airy feel, with tart red berry fruit accompanied by vibrant acidity, while a cascade of flowers swirl inside the wine. The 2020 leaves a layer of sweet tannins and a blackberry tone as it finishes with wonderful length and concentration." Vinous
"One of the wines - symbolising the great work of renewal in Montalcino - that was bottled for the first time in 1970. 36 months in large barrels for a wine with an olfactory attack of redcurrant, a hint of red orange and a touch of ginger. The sip is exciting and lively, with a memory of citrus and small fruits." Luca Gardini
"A bright red colour with firm, integrated tannins that provide length and concentration. It has a medium body with citrus and berry character and excellent length. I like it now, but give it two or three years to show its full potential." James Suckling
