There are wines that have changed the history of their country. Not by chance, not by fashion – but through a single, well-founded provocation. In 1971, Piero Antinori had the label of his new wine designed by one of the most important Italian graphic designers of his time: Silvio Coppola, known for book covers and designer furniture, for rigour and reduction. The label was minimalist – but the wine behind it was a revolution. No Trebbiano, no Malvasia. No white grapes in the red wine, as prescribed by the Chianti rules since Ricasoli. Instead: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc. Barrique instead of large barrel. A wine that thus automatically fell out of the DOC – and came onto the market as a simple Vino da Tavola. Piero Antinori signed the label with the name of his father Niccolò: a gesture of gratitude for the trust that had allowed him to be so bold in the first place.
What happened next is wine history. Tignanello became the ancestor of the Supertuscans – the category of wines that showed what Tuscany was capable of beyond the rules of denomination. The vineyard that gives the wine its name lies at 350 to 400 metres in San Casciano Val di Pesa: 77 hectares, south-west facing, limestone, Galestro and Alberese, the wind between the Greve and Pesa valleys. The assemblage has remained unchanged since 1982 – the proportion varies slightly depending on the vintage, but the character remains the same.
2023: A cool, rainy spring brought significant peronospora pressure – but the high altitude and ventilation of the Tignanello vineyard protected it effectively where low altitudes struggled. The summer was hot, without extreme heat waves – and September and October brought the diurnal temperature fluctuations that Sangiovese needs to find aromatic depth. The harvest began on 20 September with Sangiovese. Cabernet Franc followed at the end of September and Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested at the beginning of October. Strict selection in the vineyard and in the cellar was decisive for the result. Fermentation separated by variety in conical wooden vats, malolactic fermentation in barriques, then around 15 months of ageing in mainly new barriques made from French and a small proportion of Hungarian oak. After blending, a further 12 months in the bottle.
Intense ruby red with violet reflections. Sour cherry and ripe plum, pomegranate, violets on the nose – precise, clear, with aromatic purity. Behind this, a thread of graphite, cedar wood, fresh tobacco and a hint of liquorice runs through the bouquet. The flavour is polished and concentrated at the same time – the fine-grained tannins carry the wine, the acidity gives it direction, and the final has the length and clarity that you would expect from a vineyard that has learnt who it is over fifty years. "The 2023 Tignanello is a classy, polished wine. Soft and open-knit with lovely, forward fruit and bright acids, the 2023 is a total delight. Floral, spice and blood orange overtones meld into a core of red Sangiovese-driven fruit. There's a touch more Cabernet Franc in this year's blend. That comes through in the wine's aromatic presence.
