In the 1990s, almost every winegrower in Tuscany planted Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. International demand was clear, the prices were right, and old native varieties seemed old-fashioned and difficult by comparison. San Felice did the opposite. On a plot of land near the village of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the Vitiarium was established – an experimental vineyard where over 270 endangered Tuscan grape varieties were planted, in collaboration with the Universities of Florence and Pisa. Among the thirty selected red varieties was one that owes its name to its shape: Pugnitello. “The little fist”. The compact, tightly packed bunches are reminiscent of a clenched fist. A grape variety that was once widespread in Tuscany, then almost forgotten, before being rediscovered, studied, nurtured and entered into the national register of wine grape varieties in 2002. In 2003, the region of Tuscany gave the green light for commercial cultivation. Twenty years of research and passion were bottled. The grapes come from five plots on the estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga – casanova, Camponuovo, Le Rose, Poggio alle Povere, Macchione – on medium-heavy, stony soils with calcareous-marly clay. Fermentation on the skins for 20 to 25 days at 30°C to fully extract colour and structure. This is followed by 18 to 20 months inLiters French oakLiters. Eight months in bottle.

An intense, deep ruby red. On the nose, wild berries, sweet spices, tobacco and a hint of dark chocolate – — complex and seductively sensual. On the palate, it is soft and full-bodied, with robust, well-structured tannins and a fresh acidity that keeps everything in balance. A long, aromatic finish.
