In 1977, Sergio Manetti produced a pure Sangiovese from Radda in Chianti for the first time – without Canaiolo, without Colorino, and without the white grapes that the Chianti regulations required at the time. Not because he wanted to break the rules, but because he believed that this soil, these vines and this single grape variety needed no additions. From the very beginning, the wine was called Toscana IGT – not out of defiance, but out of consistency. And it bore a name rooted in the landscape itself: Le Pergole Torte – the twisted, winding pergolas of the old Chianti, those wooden trellis systems up which the vines of his grandfathers' generation used to climb. A reminder of what once was, before modernity straightened out the vineyards.

The label featured a painting by the artist Alberto Manfredi: a sleeping woman beneath a pergola, lost in reverie, resting in the shade of the vines. Sergio Manetti loved Manfredi's work and had it printed on the wine – an industrialist who granted a painter immortality. Every year, Martino Manetti selects a different image from the painter's legacy. The sleeping woman remains the soul of the label. The historic plots were planted between 1968 and 1999 – on galestro and limestone, on the hills of Radda, the coolest part of Chianti Classico. 100% Sangiovese, carefully selected. Fermentation takes place over 20 days in concrete tanks – no steel, no influence from wood at this stage, just the Sangiovese and its own nature. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in concrete. This is followed by a year in Allier barriques from France, which lend the wine texture and subtle spice. Followed by a further year in large Slavonian oak casks, which define the structure without overpowering it. Two years in wood, two materials, one voice.

In Radda, 2023 was a year characterised by marked temperature fluctuations and a long, steady ripening period – ideal conditions for a Sangiovese that prioritises freshness and precision over opulence. A luminous, deep ruby red. On the nose, black cherry, forest floor, black truffle, bark, fresh earth and pine needles – displaying a purity and concentration that truly deserves the term 'essence'. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and of exceptional depth, with lively, flawlessly integrated tannins; its freshness forms an invisible backbone, whilst the finish is long, mineral and seemingly endless.
