The origins of the name Bertinga are lost in the mists of time; at some point, Le Bertinghe became Bertinga, and to this day, the land it describes is far from gentle: rock and wind, according to the estate. Nine hectares, divided into five plots, lie at an altitude of around 420 metres; most face south and south-west, and the vines are between 15 and 25 years old. The soil dates back to the Eocene epoch, formed some 50 million years ago; it is a clay-rich calcareous marl known as Alberese, containing compact, weather-resistant stones, and is only 30 to 40 centimetres deep. It is precisely this moderate depth and the limestone content that give it its strength. Half Sangiovese, half Merlot; each variety is fermented separately in stainless steel and concrete vats. The wine is then aged for 18 months in Austrian tonneaux and French barriques – 10% of which are new – and bottle ageing lasts at least as long.
Deep ruby red. Reserved at first, then Mediterranean spice, thyme and black olives come to the fore, accompanied by red and dark berries, graphite and warm stone. Powerful and firm on the palate, with firm tannins and deep fruit; the finish offers spice and a hint of tonka bean. Neither variety gives way: this is no compromise, it is pure excitement. "An impressive bouquet of plums, blackcurrants, leather, liquorice and wood; well-balanced on the palate, characterised by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins; the finish is incredibly long, with notes of sour cherries and herbs, and a subtle hint of pepper." Vinum
"A complex, broodingand lively wine with aromas of raspberries, red cherries, leather and violets. Light to medium-bodied, very spicy, with ripe, velvety tannins and a long, crisp acidity. Full-bodied and firm. Suitable for drinking now or for ageing." James Suckling
"The Bertinga 2019 Bertinga is rich, evolved and thick through the mid-palate. Tarry tobacco and spice accompany lots of dark fruit, reflecting the natural density of the vintage." Wine Advocate
