Dreams sometimes have a very precise address. The Pfitscher family's is: Glen, above Montan, 500 metres above sea level, west-facing, clay and limestone underfoot. In 1984, when Klaus was – then 24 years old – planted this west-facing slope with Burgundian Pinot Noir clones, he knew what he was doing. Not as a calculation, but out of conviction: Something great would be created here one day. Three decades later, the time was ripe. In 2013, the family decided to vinify the parcel separately and give it a name – one that sounds like a promise: "Das Langefeld".

Today, son Hannes Pfitscher runs the cellar, an Oenologist by passion and conviction. The signature he gives this wine is the same as his father's: patience, precision, respect for the place. The grapes are harvested by hand, from small quantities, using only healthy, fully ripe grapes. This is followed by a two-day cold maceration – the grapes remain largely unstemmed, which gives the later wine the fine, spicy stalked flavour that is typical of Burgundy of this quality. Spontaneous fermentation lasts around two weeks. Ageing: twelve months in barriques, six months in 10-hectolitre wooden barrels, thirty months in the bottle. Bottled without fining or filtration. A wine that is given time – because it needs it and because it deserves it.

The 2021 vintage brought South Tyrol cool nights and a long, even autumn – classic conditions for elegance instead of power. Vigna Das Langefeld has a clear ruby red colour with a hint of garnet in the glass. The nose is precise and multi-layered: forest fruit, cherry, rosehip, with a hint of tobacco and dried lavender behind it, finely underpinned by earth and wood spice that has woven its way in without dominating. On the palate, it shows the hallmark of great Pinot Noirs: depth without heaviness, structure without harshness. The tannins are silky, the acidity fresh and precisely integrated, the finish long and characterised by a salty minerality that makes the soil palpable.
