For a biodynamic winegrower, 2024 presented one of the greatest challenges of recent years. The exceptionally wet months of May, June and July brought immense pressure from downy mildew and powdery mildew, which even the normally hardy PIWI varieties struggled to withstand. Only experience and consistent work in the vineyard ensured the vines came through this phase virtually unscathed. Late frost had already significantly reduced the harvest yield – in the end, it stood at a modest 27 hectolitres per hectare. However, the short, hot weeks from mid-July to the end of August, followed by a lovely autumn lasting until the end of September, produced grapes of a quality that exceeded all expectations.

The vineyard is situated high above Merano, at an altitude of between 630 and 730 metres; it is steep, stony and lovingly terraced, set on barren granite rock, south-facing with sunshine from early morning until late afternoon and cool night-time downdrafts. 68% Souvignier Gris and 32% Bronner, both fungus-resistant PIWI varieties. Whole-bunch pressing, extremely delicate, with a juice yield of just 55 per cent. Fermentation takes place in wooden casks using the grapes' own yeasts; during the ten-month ageing period on the fine lees, the aroma and flavour continue to develop. Only 2,949 bottles.

A bright, vibrant golden yellow. Fruity notes of quince and mirabelle plums, with a mineral hint of wet stone. On the palate, it is full-bodied and complex on the attack, but then becomes taut, with a salty minerality. SUPERIORE.DE
