"Curiosity about the future" – is the motto of this extraordinary comet, which is not just a wine, but a climate change experiment. For many years, Alois Lageder has been working on the question of which grape varieties are suitable for future higher average temperatures and more extreme weather conditions in South Tyrol. The answer: plant grape varieties from southern wine-growing regions of Europe and observe how they behave in cooler environments. The hypothesis was that these varieties would develop higher acidity and moderate sugar levels in South Tyrol. Today, VIO XIII is one of the most successful experiments in this series.

The grapes come from the Margreider Leiten at an altitude of 300 metres, from gravelly, sandy and highly calcareous soils. After the harvest, spontaneous fermentation took place, followed by around eleven months of ageing in barriques. The wine was bottled in January 2015. With 13.5 per cent alcohol by volume and 4.9 grams of acidity, it is a wine of remarkable maturity and complexity. After more than ten years in the bottle, the VIO XIII should have reached its full expressiveness today: a contemporary witness that proves that experimental approaches are not just theory, but can create drinkable visions of the future.
