Pinot Nero in the Sicilian hinterland sounds like a gamble, and Lucio Tasca took that gamble at Regaleali in 1984. The estate, owned by the family since 1830, covers almost 600 hectares in the hills of Sclafani, at altitudes ranging from 450 to 850 metres. Piana Case Vecchie lies at 480 metres, sloping towards the south-east, on deep, fine, slightly calcareous clay, and the continental climate provides the vines with cool nights and a freshness one would not expect here. Fermentation at 13 to 14 degrees, full malolactic fermentation and 36 months on the lees follow the classic method; the dosage, at 1.9 grams of residual sugar per Liters, is negligible.

A delicate salmon pink with fine, persistent bubbles. Freshly picked raspberries, sea salt and subtle minerality, with hints of yeast and bread crust in the background. Juicy and crisp on the palate, with lively acidity and a hint of salt that drives the wine forward; the fruit remains distinct and the final is dry. A sparkling wine that proves once again that Sicily can think on its feet. SUPERIORE.DE
