A handful of fresh cherries. A hearty bite. Juice running down your fingers. Anyone who tastes the Gallina 2020 experiences this moment – immediate, sensual, irresistible. Among the Roagna Barbareschi, it is the seducer – the wine that does not impress with austere grandeur, but captivates with its open charm. Since 2014, the family has been cultivating a plot in Neive's most famous MGA. The soil, consisting of calcareous loam with a high sand content, lends the Nebbiolo here that silky finesse which sets Gallina apart from its more austere neighbours. Antonio Galloni calls the vineyard "the source of the roundest and most approachable Barbaresco wines in the municipality". Wines that can be enjoyed young yet will continue to mature for decades.
A brilliantly luminous cherry red with rusty highlights heralds what is to come: a nose of unexpected depth – roasted coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate – yet always resting on a cool, chalky foundation. Cinnamon and cardamom mingle with sour cherry and wild strawberry, whilst Meyer's lemon and bergamot add vibrant notes, and the scent of pine wafts through the glass. On the palate, then, comes that hearty, juicy core that sets this wine apart from its siblings, Pajè and Albesani. Silky tannins, lively acidity, a salty lightness: everything flows. In the finish, earthy notes combine with red fruit and mineral tension. A Barbaresco whose strength lies in its elegance. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Barbaresco Gallina 2020 is the most expressive Barbaresco in Luca Roagna's range. Crushed flowers, mint, cherry, sweet red cherry and cinnamon – all these aromas pour from the glass. Soft, silky textures contribute to the wine's great charm. harvestwill find it hard to keep their hands off this gem of a wine." Vinous
"This smooth red wine offers abundant ripe fruit and a supple texture, with aromas of cherries, strawberries, rhubarb, minerals, tar and undergrowth. Lively and long on the palate, it is elegant overall, with its driving acidity defining its linear profile. Although it is ready to drink now, it will really come into its own in a few years' time." Wine Spectator
"The Gallina shows a delicate appearance with bright aromas of cherry, savory spice and sweet tobacco. Floral notes of dried rose and crushed petals add lift and elegance to the bouquet. The palate remains slender and finely etched with lightly chalky tannins that carry through to a lean, focused finish." Wine Advocate
"An elegant and floral wine with aromas of dried roses, minerals, embers, liquorice, strawberries and rhubarb. Full-bodied, supple, dense, firm and taut, yet mature, with a refined yet full-bodied finish." James Suckling
