The Alto Piemonte is a real insider tip. Between Biella and the foothills of Monte Rosa lies Lessona – a small DOC, once just as famous as Barolo, then almost forgotten for decades when the textile industry emptied the hills and left the vineyards to run wild. Paolo De Marchi, who had made his mark in Tuscany with Isole & Olena Chianti Classico, returned to the family's homeland in 1999 with his son Luca and began what some people simply call reconstruction – and what is in reality a long, determined battle for a forgotten wine region.

The Rosa del Rosa is a product of this conviction. 85 per cent Nebbiolo, 15 per cent Vespolina – from the Ormeggio, Castagnola and Belvedere vineyards in Lessona and the Madonna degli Angeli vineyard in Brusnengo, which is up to ninety years old. The soils: marine Pliocene sands on igneous rock, rich in minerals, acidic, with high levels of iron, manganese and zinc. A terroir that adds depth to the wines, including this marvellous Rosato. Hand-picked in small crates, sorted on a conveyor belt, eight hours of cold maceration on the skins – for colour and aroma extraction, not for tannin. Fermentation at 16°C, five months on the fine lees. No wood.

The result is a rosé with a characteristic salmon pink colour. The nose reveals wild strawberry, sour cherry, white peach, violets, herbs and a hint of white pepper. The palate is dry, delicately savoury, with a mineral tension that sets this wine apart from any other summer rosé. The finish is long and fresh, with the characteristic minerality of these unique sands. Not a rosé for the parasol. One for the table. SUPERIORE.DE
