Alto Piemonte is a real hidden gem. Nestled between Biella and the foothills of Monte Rosa lies Lessona – a small DOC region that was once just as famous as Barolo, but then fell into near-oblivion for decades as the textile industry emptied the hills and the vineyards were left to run wild. Paolo De Marchi, who had made his mark on Chianti Classico in Tuscany with Isole & Olena, returned to his family's homeland in 1999 with his son Luca and began what some simply call a 'rebuilding' – but which is, in reality, a long and determined struggle to revive a forgotten wine region.

The Rosa del Rosa is a product of this conviction. 85% Nebbiolo, 15% Vespolina – from the Ormeggio, Castagnola and Belvedere vineyards in Lessona, as well as the Madonna degli Angeli vineyard in Brusnengo, where some vines are up to ninety years old. The soils: marine Pliocene sands over volcanic rock, rich in minerals, with pronounced acidity and high levels of iron, manganese and zinc. A terroir that imbues the wines with depth, as is the case with this magnificent rosé. Hand-harvested into small crates, sorted on a conveyor belt, eight hours of cold maceration on the skins – for colour and aroma extraction, not for tannins. Fermentation at 16°C, five months on the fine lees. No oak.

The result is a rosé with a distinctive salmon-pink colour. The nose reveals wild strawberry, sour cherry, white peach, violet, herbs and a hint of white pepper. On the palate, it is dry, with a subtle saltiness, and imbued with a mineral tension that sets this wine apart from any ordinary summer rosé. "Fabulously, unashamedly Nebbiolo in bearing, the 2025 Rosa del Rosa is loaded with varietal character. Rose petal, lavender, ginger, cherry pit and bitter spices unfurl in a deep, dark, powerful Rosé. Nebbiolo tannins and saline acids make themselves felt from the jump. This is a very serious wine that would benefit from a decant, or even a year in the cellar to allow the structure to soften a touch. Either way, it's a wine for the dinner table." Vinous
