In January 1976, the son of a small winegrower travelled from La Morra to Burgundy and returned with one certainty: things had to change here. The family had owned five hectares since 1948, and Elio Altare wanted to bring freshness, elegance and aromatic clarity to the wine. He reduced yields, grabbed a chainsaw and dismantled the large old wooden barrels in the cellar to make room for his first barrique. His father did not understand this approach and later disinherited him, but Elio bought the estate back from his siblings and carried on. He is one of the "Barolo Boys", that generation of young winemakers who put the region on the map of great wines.
His daughter Silvia continues to run the estate. For the UnoPerUno, Nebbiolo grapes are sourced from all the estate's vineyards, grown on marl mixed with clay and sand, facing south and south-east. Then begins the manual work that gives the wine its name: one berry at a time is removed from the vine so that only pure fruit enters the must, with no stems, leaves or unsightly berries.
A pale ruby red with garnet-red highlights. The bouquet offers rose petals and blossoms, alongside fresh red fruits, blood orange, sweet spice and a hint of mint, followed by notes of new leather. Warm and elegant on the palate, with silky tannins and juicy fruit, supported by a richness that remains perfectly balanced. What began with a chainsaw is perfected with the fingertips. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Barolo Unoperuno 2022 presents sweet, red-fruity notes, sweet spices, mint, blood orange and the scent of new leather, whilst showcasing the full natural richness of the vintage. Ripeness takes centre stage, yet all the elements are superbly balanced. The blend of vineyard plots helps to temper some of the more exuberant characteristics of the 2022 vintage. The Unoperuno is the most clearly ripe of the Altare." Vinous
"It displays the same lovely character that runs through this series of new releases and reflects the warm, dry vintage, yet the wine has gained in complexity and depth, thanks to the special care and craftsmanship that have gone into its production. It unfolds with full vigour right from the start – which is rare for a Barolo – and this immediacy is one of the main strengths of this vintage." Wine Advocate
