If Barbaresco has a face, it is that of Asili. This vineyard on the western edge of the municipality – gently sloping, facing south-west, on limestone-rich clay soils with a fine vein of sand – produces a Nebbiolo that stands apart from all others in the appellation: not through power, but through grace. Not through extraction, but through transparency. It is not a loud wine. It murmurs – but what it says is not easily forgotten. Bruno Giacosa recognised this early on. From 1967 onwards, he vinified Asili grapes, initially sourced from elsewhere, then – in the late 1990s – from his own estate: 2.5 hectares, which he carefully consolidated from various plots. Today, his vines lie side by side with those of Gaja, Roagna and the Produttori del Barbaresco – a quiet circle of the greatest. Bruna Giacosa and cellar master Dante Scaglione nurture this legacy with the same restraint that Bruno cultivated throughout his life: let the soil speak for itself. And in the cellar, they let it have its say.

The winemaking process is traditional: spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks, 25 days' maceration, full malolactic fermentation. Aged for 20 months in large French oak barrels, followed by bottle ageing. Bottled without filtration. The 2023 vintage, like the 2022 and 2024 vintages, will be released with a white label – Bruna Giacosa did not select any of these three vintages for the Riserva. This in no way detracts from the wine; it simply serves as a reminder of just how rare the red label really is.

In the glass, a luminous garnet red with a hint of orange – delicate, almost watercolour-like. The nose unfolds like a poem: raspberry, wild strawberry, dried rose, violet, a hint of orange peel, a distant hint of clove. Everything is there, yet nothing is overpowering. On the palate, it is silky and crisp, with sweet, supple tannins, fresh acidity and a finish that never runs out – it fades away, slowly, spiced, infinitely delicate. Rabajà is poise. Asili is grace.
