Terracotta is not a trend. It is the oldest wine container known to mankind – older than wood, older than stone, older than any wine culture we know by name. Elena Fucci is not looking forwards, but backwards: to a time when clay and volcanic earth were the same substance – and wine did not yet need a method to explain itself. The amphorae come from Impruneta near Florence, the centre of Tuscan terracotta craftsmanship – 700 Liters, untreated, permeable, breathing. No coating, no control over what happens: That's the point.
The vines stand at 600 metres in the Contrada Solagna del Titolo, 50 to 70 years old, on volcanic Pozzolana soil with visible layers of lava, lapilli and ash – a geology that bears the history of Monte Vulture in every centimetre. Hand-picked at the end of October, destemming, fermentation almost entirely in terracotta, 12 to 13 days of maceration with regular pumping over and délestage. Malolactic fermentation also in amphora. Then 18 months rest in the clay – no wood notes, no intervention, no compromise. Six months of ageing in the bottle. Only 933 bottles!
Deep, bright ruby red with purple reflections. Cherry, plum, blackcurrant, blueberry, almond and nut flavours on the nose – dense and multi-layered, with mineral ash notes that come unmistakably from the Vulture. The palate is enveloping and precise at the same time: the finest tannins of remarkable texture, lively acidity, a salinity and minerality that carries and sustains the very long finish. No wood has spoken here. Only the earth, the clay and the vine. SUPERIORE.DE
"Amphora's 2022 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo seduces with a haunting, dark bouquet that blends citrus-influenced blackberries with crushed rock, ash and a hint of camphor. It soothes with its round texture and vibrant acidity, while a cascade of red and black fruits rides on a current of cooling acidity. Although tannic, the 2022 retains fantastic energy and finishes long and delicious with a lingering minerality." Vinous
"The 2022 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo from Amphora is a full-bodied wine with dark fruit, savoury spice and an earthy side that comes to the fore through fermentation in amphorae and ageing in clay vats for a further 18 months. This talented young winemaker is always at the cutting edge of Basilicata's small wine scene. It's a shame that there aren't more enterprising winemakers like her in this beautiful and unexplored region." Wine Advocate
