At the beginning of the 20th century, Caterina Zardini lost her husband. What remained were ten children, a hundred hectares of land in the heart of Valpolicella Classica and a winery that her husband Carlo Campagnola had built up with passion – he had won the prize for the best Recioto in the region in 1907. Caterina could have handed over the estate. But she didn't. She took over the work and continued to run the winery with all her children, laying the foundations for five generations of a wine family that is still rooted in Marano di Valpolicella today. This Amarone bears her name, a tribute.
Tenuta Caterina Zardini is located in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, at an altitude of 300 metres, south-east exposure, 36 hectares on Eocene limestone – the soil that gives this zone its characteristic minerality and structural rigour. Corvina Veronese and Corvinone make up 70 per cent, Rondinella 30 per cent. The best grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September and carefully selected. What then follows is the core of the Amarone craft: around 100 to 120 days of traditional appassimento on wooden racks until the grapes have lost 35 to 40 per cent of their weight. December or January: pressing. Fermentation at 13 to 17 degrees over 30 days of maceration. Two years in French oak tonneau. A further year in the bottle.
The 2020 vintage in Valpolicella was warm and dry with well-concentrated grapes – ideal for the Appassimento process, which favours ripeness and concentration anyway. Deep ruby red in the glass with rich brown garnet reflections. The nose opens slowly and with dignity: dried cherry, plum, dried rose petals, juniper berry, bitter almond, vanilla, a long dark undertone of coffee, cedar wood and spice bark. Full-bodied and warm on the palate, with a silky density that comes from the long appassimento – the tannins are ripe and multi-layered, the warmth of the wine is present but never heavy. The finish is long, spicy, with the typical pleasant bitter note in the final that distinguishes the classic Amarone from all others. SUPERIORE.DE
